On Friday we have the date that makes some very nervous......Friday the13th.So does the thought of that day make you worried or just think what aload of old rubbish......or has the date in the past showed to you that it is indeed a day to be watched?

I may be weird, Carolly - okay I am indeed weird - but I've always thought Friday 13 was a lucky day. :sneaky:

I grew up with a mother who saluted magpie's, never crossed knives etc etc..... It's load of old rubbish. It's no different to any other day. Mishaps happen every day but people just remember them better if they happen to be on fri 13th.

You don't remember Dave Allen's shaggy dog story about HMS Friday?Sometime in the 19th century, the Royal Navy attempted to finally dispel the old superstition among sailors that beginning a voyage on a Friday was certain to bring bad luck. To demonstrate the falseness of this belief, they decided to commission a ship named HMS Friday. Her keel was laid on a Friday, she was launched on a Friday, and she set sail on her maiden voyage on a Friday, under the command of a Captain James Friday. She was never seen or heard from again.The remarkable thing about it is the number of times it's been repeated since as true.

There's a thing called reinforcement which can be demonstrated in both animals and people, both for positive and negative events. In order to try to make something happen again that either did happen in the past or (in the case of people) someone was told happened in the past, people and animals will try to recreate the immediate circumstances before it happened. If they want to avoid it happening again they'll avoid recreating the circumstances. I think people trying to avoid the perceived bad things they've heard about Friday 13th change their behaviours. The question is whether there's a real link between the behaviours and the feared event. If the feared event is that Friday 13th is an unlucky day I honestly can't think of how anyone would know what "circumstances" are. Doing nothing all day might well be the reason something good didn't happen, in which case the bad luck's caused by the attempt to avoid it.

Dave Allen..... wasn't he wonderfull?

I totally agree. If you go mountain climbing on fri 13th, it's likely you will have a mis-hap due to probability.

I myself prefer to defy friday 13th and deliberately walk into traffic and under ladders. Nothing has ever happened to me before.

I really can't understand people who refuse to go out side etc.

Most superstitions are based from religion. It has nothing to do with weather the probability of some-thing happening to you on fri 13th.

You can take any religion and connect it to any day.

Ever wonder what the big deal is about Friday the 13th? We did, and found most of the superstition is rooted in religion.
I for one find subjects like this interesting.....maybe rubbish to some I know.

If you asked 1,000 children what fri 13th was about..... they wouldn't have a clue other than what they have heard adults say. It is similar to folklore and urban myths passed down through generations.

You can not connect any religion with superstition.... the two do not hold together.

My mother used to bow to pie-bald horses......What religion does that come from from???

You can take any religion and connect it to any day.I happen to not believe in any type of religion and have my own thoughts about that area.I also dont believe I am going to walk under a ladder on Friday and get a tin of paint fall on me or I will see a black cat and have to watch myself......no I dont believe in any of it but know plenty that do and because I dont believe it I have to respect their concerns for the day.One person I used to know actually wouldnt go out that day and I never understood her but also would never mock her.

Not at all, one of the finest books I ever read was all about superstition and gave what I found to be a coherent explanation for its existence. I'm not sure whether I read it at school or just after but it was a while ago. The Golden Bough: A Study in Magic and Religion by James George Frazer.

I don't want to argue with any-one... I just don't believe that religion comes into it. Alot of superstition is passed down from generations. I had the lot with my mum and i must admit that i'd do some out of habit such as throwing salt over my shoulder or never putting new shoes on a table. It's not part of my religion, it's what was passed down in our family through generations. When ever i do something like throw salt over my shoulder, i know i'm doing it out of habit and not because i believe it in a way that i believe my religion.

No, not really. We were taken to church for rememberence day etc but as a child, i just knew the church to be a builing where we went to give prayer or thanks. The actual religion of my choice was not pushed upon me as my parents were great believers in us making our own minds up when we were old enough. My religion of C of E was entirely my choice as was my brother becoming and practising Catholic.

I don't see the difference between that and a person who grows up in a non-superstitious family and decides as an adult to become superstitious.

I suppose your right. I asked my mother where she got some of these superstitions from and she said her mother was deeply superstitious, yet i decided quite early in life that it was a lot of nonsence. They were deeply superstitious yet not religious.

Although i thought it was nonsence, i would appease my mother as if i spilt salt, she would have a fit if i didn't chuck the salt over my shoulder. I asked her once what this meant and she said it was to blind the devil. Yet she didn't believe in the devil... hence my believing that some superstitions are merely urban myths passed through generations.

There are two Friday the 13th's in a row - February & March. My birthday is Friday March 13th and I consider it lucky. I should go play the lottery:wah:

If I were you I'd write on the good hand "NOT THIS ONE!" before you go just to be sure, and put a glove on it taped to your wrist.

I will be at a funeral this Friday the 13th, and from here on in I think I will use every friday the 13th to remind me how precious life is.
