In a thought a moment grows

Expands and makes its home

Takes its shoes off, wiggles its toes

And looks for fertile ground to roam.

In a thought time has no grip

No boundaries or protective walls

Into a moment a mind may slip

No one to catch it when it falls.

In a thought I sink or swim

Through muddy water all alone

Looking for a branch or limb

To grasp and pull me safely home.

In my thoughts I take the world

And try to place it into order

Gathering pieces as they're hurled

To fit inside a puzzle's border.

And when the last piece falls in place

I must step back to see its face

And before the image starts to fade

I see not the picture I thought I'd made.

My thoughts can be a tricky lot

Waging fruitless battles I have fought.

ahh Koan, wonderful poetry as always, i am still in love with the dolphin poem :) ...this one i can relate to in that sometimes the work i do feels fruitless, neverending and thankless, i know that is not really what you meant...but poetry is in the eye of the beholder i suppose. i have a story to tell you about a poem, will do it when i have the muse to discuss it. soon.

i hope this isn't a bore (i'll be brief) ...i was born in a house my dad really loved. when i was about 20 he drove by it to show me. the night he died i was distraught, bereft, destroyed. i don't know why, but i went to my bookshelf and pulled a poetry volume . it literally fell open in my lap to a poem by joyce kilmer, the author of "trees". it was about a house, and described it in detail. it turns out joyce kilmer was the next door neighbor to that house, and the poem was about it specifically. i read it at my dad's funeral, i KNEW he sent it to me that night. :-1

I think you are right about your father sending it to you and it is far from boring. Thanks for sharing your memories. :-6
