Sugar Babe
HOW Lady Sugar fell in love with Alan when he was a penniless Apprentice, defied her parents to marry him and became his inspiration.
From the moment Ann Simons fell into conversation with the cocky 18-year-old East End barrow boy who had swaggered into her local youth club in the summer of 1966 she knew he was special.
To others, the young Alan Sugar may have appeared to be just another poor boy from the wrong side of the tracks, who sold cheap electronic goods from a clapped out van and talked the talk about becoming a successful businessman.
But Ann, then just a shy and inexperienced 16-year-old trainee hairdresser, was perceptive enough to know that while life with Sugar might be risky, it would never be dull – and chose to ignore their doubts.
And over the months, as they fell in love, her faith in him was tested even by her father, Johnny, who was himself a street trader and rather more experienced and successful than Sugar.
