Jr Minks and I are going the first of May. Our plan is to start with Rome (naturally) then head south to Sorrento/Amalfi Coast area.
I know no Itallian so am reading "Itallian for Dummies". I chose May for the cooler temps (with luck we miss the rain) and for fewer tourists.
I am sooooo excited.
Has anyone been? Any tips?
We are going as the complete tourist when in Rome, so don't try and tell me to stay off the beaten path's hehehehehe
Once in Sorrento we will maybe take it slower, but I really want to go see Pompeii. I know there will be much to miss but hey this is the girl who went to England and never got to Stonehenge :yh_rotfl

We have bumped this trip to September due to work. Soooooooooooooo I have longer to research. Good lord whatever did we do prior to the internet. I have found sooo much out online. Great travel advise and tips and info everywhere whoooo hooooo.
My next dilema is take a tour or tour on our own. I like the tour on our own thing as we can take our time and we can get side tracked and not worry.
Our current plan is Rome, Florence (and Pisa), Venice then last nite back to Rome and with luck we can stay in a higher end hotel for one night just to say we did.
However there are some mighty tempting tours out there that allow us to see way more places... hmmm quantity or quality?
What to do, what to do.

Could you do both? Join some tours at the beginning of your trip and visit other places on your own in a hire car at the end of your trip? or vice versa?
Have a wonderful, wonderful time. I was just reading a book on Rome and wishing I could go. Have a fab time. Eat lots of pizza and gelati and bring back lots of piccies. :-6

aw thanks you guys.
Jr is 18 years old, I think we we can do both we are going for about 16 days and hit up Rome first maybe take a tour from there south... then head North, Florence maybe a tour from there to Pisa, but after that we head to Venice, I think I want to take our time and totally absorb Venice at our pace.
It is exciting I just can't wait to go. This will be part 3 of one of my biggest life dreams.... "hit 3 of the big major cities of the world" I have been to London, Paris and Rome is to come.... oh pinch me hehehehe

Me too!!! I plan on being there in July, though. I visited Italy twice before... the first time I spent most of my time in Rome and Castel Gandolfo working on a project and the last time I was just passing through so I haven't had a lot of time to do much sight-seeing, unfortunately... I'm afraid it will be the same this time as I'll spend most of my time teaching art.
Tips: Watch out for the Italian men... they'll LOVE you! (Learn at least some dirty Italian so you'll know what they're saying about you.)
You should be fine other than that, if you're learning some Italian. Oh, watch your purse, too. :p

good advice thanks. Yes I have the "Itallian for Dummies" book am trying to learn something anything ahahahahaha
Yes I heard pickpocketting is a national past time there but I credit myself with a fair bit of common sense and figure money belts are a wise choice or a little backpack with a zipper on the underside (between me and the pack) and put femminine hygine products in the outside pockets for those sneaky pick pockets.:yh_rotfl

That is so cool! I'm green with envy. I so want to go back. I loved Rome, Florence, (the museums and the ART!) Venice, (be sure to see the Doge's palace) Sorrento, Sicily, Pisa, Naples, Pompeii. I just love ITALY!!
Do we have a travel forum? I'm going to Iceland in August, as well as some other places and I need to ask some questions.

Italy is fantastic to visit and the men are YUMMMMMY!!!!:yh_hugs
You will have such a wonderful holiday.
Just watch out for the pickpockets, especially those on Vespas-wear a money belt under your clothes, and don't sit down in a cafe/coffeeshop just for a coffee-you'll pay double the price.
If you need a tour guide,I could be packed in 20 minutes.
