My kids bought me a super duper mountain bike for Christmas; I already use an exercise bike so I’m no stranger to peddling my heart out. Now I’ll be able to peddle and actually get somewhere. Here in Tenerife you cannot go anywhere without a hill or mountain in the way. I love the bike it really is great fun, my only problem is keeping up with the kids,( i say kids but they are in their 20's ) give me a few more weeks and I’ll be up the front with the rest of them. Seriously, I do enjoy it. I have the advantage of having good weather all the year.:-6

I sit on my comfortable bike in the gym, plug in the headphones, watch the news for 5-6 miles, than walk a couple of miles while watching a movie. :-6

Anyway, Jimbo, I am proud that you are excercising. Good for you!:)

Hubby and I have bikes, but we just ride them around the yard once in awhile. No mountains, no bike paths in our neck of the woods.

Hello Jim,

No, sorry, I don't ride mountain bikes....I was supposed to get a great discount on a gorgeous, Italian, mountain bike but it fell through @#%**@@:-5

But, I love to ride my 3 speed bike locally:-5. When the tourists have gone home and it's nice to ride with more room, I'll ride my bike 5 km when I'm off from work. It's such a relaxing feeling...;)

A few years ago on one of my trips home to Ireland I rented a nice bike and rode my bike everyday in Donegal, through the boglands for the whole summer. Donegal is full of mountains and hills...sometimes good, sometimes bad. I'd ride from Dungloe to Dunlewy which is about 23 km and a fairly easy ride except for some hills which I walked my bike up.

I also rode my bike from Dungloe to Meenacross which is about 10 km and that was a very difficult ride because it was alllllllllllllllll steep hills:(.

Good luck with your riding Jim:-6

Good place to go to get fit for "proper" mountain biking i.e. out in the wild and woolly actual mountains. This is bit too civilised-good grief you you can even nip back to the coffee shop for lunch and they have showers and toilets! Mountain bikers are real softie's nowadays. Been mountain biking since they didn't have suspension-well they did but front forks used to cost hundreds of pounds. Drop offs were never a problem you just got off and walked. Have two smashed bike helmets I keep in the garage to remind myself to be careful. I'm saving my pennies for disc brakes next time my wheels need replaced. To go fast with confidence you need really really good brakes.

Our dog is a collie dalmation cross at least it seems to have the dalmation instinct to run alongside rather try and run in front of you all the time. Our last dog-a standard poodle- we clocked at 27 miles per hour. This one seem slightly faster although the speedo is knackered and I'm not sure, noticeably more stamina though. Thirty miles and the little sod was still up for it. Two years old nor so we can plan some longer routes. Don't feed the dog when you are out-they tend to gorge and then puke up in your car :(

I did one trip a number of years ago when I cycled the west coast of Ireland.

You know the saying ‘may the wind be always at your back...’? Well it wasn’t it was always in my face, it rained even when there were no clouds in the sky.

By the time I got to Cork I was ready to through the bike into the Atlantic.

The bike, (poor thing) is still in my shed covered in rust.

Now I take the car:driving:

I remember cycling up one hill that I thought would never end, I had my Sony Walkman on and the song playing was Eric Clapton’s ‘I am at my breaking point’,

YouTube - Eric Clapton - "Breaking Point" RAH 1990

Not a good song to have on when you are actually at your breaking point...:wah:

I wanted to throw the Walkman into the Atlantic as well...

I go and have done some great tours in the past, but the best place I have been recently is the Altura trail in Whinlatter forest near Braithwaite. I hadnt been mountain biking for ages but still got round and the downhill is brilliant. I'll post a vid clip later.

:yh_rotfl Used to cycle tour a lot. The wind is ALWAYS against you especially going uphill and it veers when you change direction as well to keep itself that way.

OMG... Only.....I made the mistake of watching this early this morning before work. I was light headed after watching the bike sped down the mountain and zip around those curves.

I felt like I was on a roller coaster......Oy vey, how could you guys enjoy doing that...are there any women riding their bikes there??

OK, I admit it...I'm a coward:o:o

And........gmc.....I couldn't believe your video....all those rocks on the path would have destroyed me.

I wonder...has anyone falled down or off the mountain???

I don't go for the really extreme drop off kind of stuff but I've come of a few times and somersaulted twice. Glen Tress is interesting-on some of the bends there are gashes in the tress where people have lost it. Routes like the ones shown are actually a lot safer than if you are out in the wilds-at least there is usually help close by and the ground more predictable. charging downhill in a wilderness track and hitting a patch of sand or bog will pitch you over the handlebars, you learn to be a bit careful.

Rugby and football are far more dangerous sports-just ask any casualty department. At least in something like mountain biking you decide the level of risk taken yourself without having to worry about some moron kicking you in the kneecap.

There are a lot of women doing it now. Downhill (where brute strength helps) their times are not much slower than the males. cross country they can hold their own quite well.

:yh_rotfl:yh_rotfl:eek: That's terrible. Hope you can sit comfortably.

You'll find letting the dog tow you doesn't work either, every time it sees a sheep you find yourself being dragged into ditches and up hillsides whether you want to chase the sheep or not. (you could be a closet welshman for all I know.)

Ran in to these guys at the weekend,

YouTube - Cairngorm Reindeer

small herd ran right past us on and my dog took off running with them (not trying to catch, luckily, just joined in the fun gallop they were having) have you any idea how helpless you feel when your dog runs away with a herd of deer. I mean chasing after is not really a viable option is it? luckily he came back.

I'm a recent convert and now have a bike down here in London (you're right about the fumes Jimbo and it's damn'd near impossible to get away from them round here) and another at home where the hills are.

It's almost all road work though - the trails are either too boggy or too short to be worth using.
