More good news, we now learn that as many as 20% of young American adults have mental problems in the form of personality disorders, although I have to say walking around a shopping mall and observing the various machinations, tattoos and body piercing tempers my shock at this revelation. :(

Obsessive or compulsive disorders and anti-social behavior top the list and are said to lead to substance abuse and violence. What do we have to look forward to when these twenty-something’s grow up, assuming of curse they ever do?

As with most such studies, while just released it is based on interviews in 2001 and 2002 so we have a fair chance that things have gotten worse, what with our Islamist friends blowing up people like a 300 bowler, September 11 and now the meltdown of the world economy. See, I told you it was more good news.

Full employment for lawyers is a given, but now we seem bound and determined to apply the same standards to psychologists and psychiatrist. The problem is you can’t find one when you need them even now.

Is this 20% rate for personality disorders new, who knows, but I suspect society has been generating the depressed and obsessive for sometime, we may now just be better at coming up with new labels. I wonder if that bully I knew in grammar school was really suffering from ADD. :sneaky:

Progress is often defined in the eye of the beholder, and one expert thinks people are over diagnosed for this stuff, but again who the heck knows? One thing is for sure though, 20% of the population appears to have yet another excuse to explain away its failings.

One the other hand, my wife is convinced I am obsessed with this laptop and my Blackberry ®. I must admit if I was left with only the papers to read and the TV news to view, I would likely be more depressed than I am over the state of the world. :-1

The World Health Organization did a chart on the basis of the study, the four highest-rated countries were the US, Colombia, Ukraine and Lebanon. What strange company you keep.

Italy, on the other hand, scarcely registered. They didn't even bother testing Britain.

The most common problems were panic attacks, phobias and post-traumatic stress disorder except in Ukraine where "unemployment is rampant as the country struggles with westernization and mood disorders including depression topped the list". Maybe the US swung more toward depression over the last year?

If I was American I would be depressed as well.

At least here we don't have to get depressed about being unable to afford treatment:sneaky:

I was very shocked to learn recently that in England, you can recieve 'Disability Benifit' if you are depressed. I have the greatest of sympathy for anyone suffering from depression as my mother suffered badly, however, the person i know who claims has nothing depressive about them when it's time for the pubs to open.

It makes me wonder how many claim disability benifit for depression where it is not actually diagnosed, more of a lazy Gp dishing out the certificates and pills.

You can get it here in the US as well. You just need a Doctor who is willing to run the gauntlet of paper work to declare you disabled due to mental issues i.e. depression, ADD, bi-polar(use to be manic depression) you name it if the doctor is willing you can become disabled for these reasons.

It wouldn't be so bad, if here, these people took up the counselling and therepy that is on offer to them. I'm sure genuine sufferers do. The one's i know, don't. It's an easy excuse not to get out of bed until mid day and claim benifit. I just think the qualifying process should be far more rigourous. The genuine sufferers could only benifit and the country could save millions wasted on people who use it as the easy option.

Pretty much if your not truly disabled you have no right to the benefits in my opinion. The sad thing is people are able to get Doctors to put them on disability for mental disorders that the proper medication should fix. I'm not saying there aren't those out there that are mentally disturbed enough to be declared disabled and they should get benefits. But there are many that aren't that play the system.
