Amen to that Hoss all the males and several females in my family have served as well. Most in WWI (my grand father dad side), My Dad, Uncles, and Aunts all served in WWII we are a long line of service Veterans. My mom went and put flag on all their grave at Fort Rosecrans cemetery today. :yh_flag:yh_flag

All of my uncles served in WWII, and at least one aunt. My father was a marine during WWII and missed the battle of Okinawa only because it was over before his ship was to dispatch her forces.



I served in the US Air Force 21 years and spent 10 years in Okinawa. I was always in a support position and was blessed to never have seen battle, or even the Middle East. I retired as a Master Sergeant (E-7).

you know it does not matter if you are for this war or not. The men and women who risk their lives in everyway. Need to be honored. Thank God we have people like this. That is what this country is based on. God bless them all:)

I was a young teenager during the Nam war. Now i think back how they felt when they came back. Being called BABY killers. They did what they HAD TO Do. I have never been in a war situation. The fear, the stress, the pressure. Must be over whelming. The old saying must be true" don;t judge if you haven't walked in their shoes."

My Gran had more troops than 'Eisenhower.

While Dad was away in the RAF, my maternal grandparents had a pub in a tiny village. It was the only pub for miles in 'West Sussex'

When American and Canadian Air Force arrived, they built one base in a field one side and the American base in the field the other side.

Well, for a small village pub, you can imagine the sudden escaltion of sales.

The troops also loved Gran's afternoon tea's where she bake them scone's with home made jam and cream.

My Gran was ferocious and the troops called her 'Good Queen Bessie'. If she liked you.. you got a tab.. and were able to pay at the end of the month or your leave.

There were no Juke-boxes those days so gran would put my mother who was 16 yrs old up on to the tables to sing for the troops. They used to love to hear 'We'll meet again'.

My mum and her younger sister would run to the attic room every time there was a scramble when we were being raided by German's. They'd hang out the window and wait hours until they had come back. My mother used to say 'We counted them out..we counted them back in'. Often the number returning was less than went out and mum and her sister would stay up until the small hours of the morning, straining their ears hopint to hear the rumble of an injured aircraft limping home.

There were many funny storie's passed down from my gran and grand-dad. He had a broken back so could not fight and served in the pub. He told me once that the local police officer would stop by and ask 'Have the yanks been in?' This meant that although times were hard with rationing, my gran vever went without diesel, nylons, candy, beef, fruit coffee etc etc and as fast as the contents of the US base supplys were being sneaked into the back door of the pub, the barrels of beer were being sneaked out the front to the troops.

As my mother loved to dance, she had to write to my father and ask his permission for 'a fine American Airman' to escort her to the local dance where Glen Miller music was played. His name was 'Frank Divatore' Fron 'Ohio'.

Strangers arrived... only friends went home.

My Dad, served in the US Army SF, Rangers, Light Infantry, Retired at the rank of Master Sgt (E8). He is a combat veteran of numerous engagements/wars. He has recently been recalled and is actively serving abroad in the War on Terror.
