That is actually done deliberately in supermarkets to both accommodate the changing product ranges as well as to change shopping behaviors. Most people become regular brand shoppers; they know exactly where the products they want are and eventually can become blind to other brands and products.
Companies will pay premium prices for particular shelf space, the most prominent being center and at eye level. (You often notice that kid’s products such as the kid’s cereals and stuff are at a lower shelf level so it is at the eye level of kids).
A complete move around of products forces people to look, and therefore re-open there eyes to other selections, and perhaps even alter purchasing behaviors.

Hmmmm Interesting Mike
So you think whoever moved them is thinking some dont get used enough and so the popular ones have been moved from top spot?

Often they will run stocks down a bit to make the change over easier, or it could be a signal that the product could be soon replaced with something new.
I use to be in this business.

Would you mind telling them that while we super appreciate the magnificent scientific data we just want the ****ing can of corn and when we cant find it, it used to be right there for the love of all that is holy did they move it again and we go home frazzled and the whole weekend turns into some kind of hellish nightmare !

Yes, I noticed that this morning. They must have added an extra one. As for the grocery store, that has happened twice to me and just when you've gotten used to it one way the next week it's all screwed up.:-5:-5

I used to switch stores and tell them on my way out that since I had to find stuff all over again, I might as well give their competitor a shot at my business... actually found a local chain that doesn't do it and honors all the competitors coupons..:-6

The other things supermarkets do is study what they call ‘Traffic Flow’. The layout of a store is specifically done so to guide shoppers to ever area of the store.
Have you ever noticed?
In large stores, near the entrance is often the fresh food section, particularly if there is a food court, it is there, this is done so the smell of fresh food makes you kind of Hungry when you enter, it is a fact that people buy more things they don’t need when they are hungry.
Have you ever noticed that often the main things that you need are far apart from each other.
Milk is often the other side of the store from bread, fruit and vegetables are the other side of the store from the meat counter. The dairy section is somewhere else altogether.
All this is to get you to cover as much floor area as possible.
Then others are close together to drive impulse buying, baby food and diapers are often close to kids cloths, games and videos.
Things may be moved to enhance Traffic Flow as well.
A lot of thought goes into your daily shopping..

The bread & milk sections are right next to each other in mine. Ours is very well put together and I prefer shopping at this store, but you are right as the food court is right there at the entrance. Umm, I love their fried chicken:-4
