Ottery St Mary was destroyed overnight, apparently. By Hail and Flood. Fire crews were stuck in a six foot hail drift at one stage. I blame George Bush.

Pestilence and Famine no doubt wait in the wings.

I expect Betty Boop's been telling her neighbours that Britain's cut off from mainland Cornwall as a result of it. She's a separatist is Betty.

I'm jealous of the snow, I haven't been sledging for (oh blimey I just worked it out!) 24 years!!! Living in the mild part of the country is ok but you miss out on the fun! (yes, yes, I know snow is not always fun - but I love it!!)

This was scarey news as we sold a holiday let in Venn Ottery about five years ago when our mother died. It doesn't surprise me as any visit there found it was the only place in Britain to have snow banks when the sun was shining everywhere else. I hope the wildlife is o.k. It's rich in natural wildlife.

That's a good link Immy, thank you.Around four inches of rain lashed Ottery St Mary in east Devon between 1am and 3am, said a spokesman. The weather system which caused chaos in and around the town had a radius of "not much more than two miles," he said. "It is probably one of those occasions when we can call it a freak event."I've only seen a focused storm like that once, over the Euston Road between Tottenham Court Road and Pentonville Road. The underground filled with water, the pumps couldn't cope. That must have been back in the eighties. Just standing under that weight of rain was an experience.

It's very strange how these freak weather conditions affect such a small area. I know this area well and it has always had a problem with snow. This was incredible though. Glad i wasn't still staying there, you'd never have got out your cottage.
