I think it's quite likely that Illinois will give its Electoral College votes to Senator Obama.

Because I think that's so likely, I'm prepared to offer odds of 100 to 1 against Senator McCain getting those votes, but that bet's on the other list.

This isn't a voting thread, it's a betting thread. I'm taking bets on which candidate will win which state.

Then we both think the same thing. What should the bet between us be?

But we both agree it's very likely that Senator Obama will win Illinois. He already has a history of winning it as a Senator.

I'm so confident that Senator Obama will win Illinois that I'm already offering to pay out 10,000 casino dollars if he loses there, to anyone who will pay me 100 casino dollars if I'm right and he wins Illinois.

I'll offer you a special bet if you like - I'll pay you 100,000 casino dollars if Senator Obama wins Texas, if you'll pay me 100 casino dollars if he loses Texas. That's odds of a thousand to one which is overconfidence in a bookmaker on something so uncertain as a landslide election.

see I have no idea how he did in Texas, I was beting he would win in Illinois because that's his second home.

thing is to, if we are betting together for Obama in Illionis to win, ours is a win win situation right?

will have to study up some more:-5

off to bed, we shall continue tomorrow.

The intention of a bookmaker is to offer a bet to anyone who wants to take it, and to make the bet sufficiently attractive that other people will want to take it, and to hope he'll win more money from winning bets than he has to pay out.on losing bets.

The bets I'm offering are all in the opening post of my two betting threads. They're my shop window.

Every bet is in the form "I'll agree to pay you THIS MUCH if SOMETHING happens if you'll agree to pay me THAT MUCH if it doesn't". That tends to be the way all bookmakers in the world offer bets.

People come and browse the list of what's on offer much like they'd browse the contents of any shop. If they see a bet they think they can win they might agree to it.

If the bet's not listed, rather like if a shop doesn't have a particular item, it's not for sale. It's like going into a swimwear shop and asking for a size 6 blue-striped cotton twist bikini and being told they don't have one. You could ask them to make you one and agree a price but it's more common to buy from what they stock.

Your win-win bet seems to be that if Senator Obama wins in Illinois we both pay each other 200 casino dollars and that if he loses in Illinois neither of us pays anything. It's not really a bet with an end result.

Roll up, get your bargain bets at spot the bookmakers.

Is there nobody willing to risk 100 casino dollars to win 10,000 casino dollars?

On bets as good as these?

Does no brave soul here think Senator Obama can take Georgia? Or Florida? Or Mississippi? Not even at a hundred to one odds in your favour?

There's no trick, it's all above board, I'm not a stage magician. I feel as though I'm holding out banknotes and nobody will take them

Montana? Nebraska?

Or go for a long shot like Tennessee or Texas?

Roll up, get'em while they're hot. There are four million Muslims in the USA and you can bet your britches they're never voting for a Republican again. This might be the first ever election in which the Muslims and the Jews are voting for the same candidate.

Last of the big spenders, eh?

Montana was 21 points inside the Republican camp in 2004, that's a big swing you're aiming at.

You managed to find two of the closest run states, I'm impressed. Especially with Montana, that had been a 20 point spread for Bush last time. It'll take a day or three before they produce the final totals. There seems to be little point in any lawsuits as far as the Presidential counts go - I wonder how many there will be for Congress though.
