"The Mermaid" by Susie Sawyer
If just for a moment you'll lend me your ear,
I've a bittersweet story I'd like you to hear.
A long time ago, on the wide open sea,
a lovely young Mermaid swam wild and free.
With a voice clear as crystal she sang to the sky,
sharing her music with ships passing by.
She sang from her heart in a language her own.
Her words echoed freely to places unknown.
The sailors would tell of the voice from the deep
that often would soothe them and sing them to sleep.
Now, Mermaids are taught they must always take care
to keep themselves hidden from Fish of the Air.
But Mermaids are known to do curious things,
forgetting the risk curiosity brings.
Perhaps that is why, on a warm summer night,
the Mermaid forgot to remain out of sight.
Entranced by the stars in the cloudless night sky,
she swam, unaware of the boat sailing by.
As she sang from the surface, the flash of her hair
caught the eye of a sailor who spotted her there.
He called to the Captain. In silence they steered
to the spot where the lovely young Mermaid appeared.
They thought she might flee, but that wasn't the case.
She greeted the men with a smile on her face.
Swimming up to the sailor, she held out her hand.
Though she spoke not a word, he could still understand.
The sailor dove in and the Mermaid began
to swim in a circle around the young man.
With a swirl and a splash, the sea started to quake,
the Mermaid and sailor caught up in its wake.
The Captain looked on as a blinding white light
pulled them under the waves and they vanished from sight.
After searching all night for his lost sailor friend,
the Captain decided his search had to end.
As he steered toward the east, blinking tears from his eyes,
a rock swathed in foam held a welcome surprise.
The light of the sun behind clouds thin as lace
cast a warm amber glow on the couple's embrace.
For during the night they had fallen in love –
the girl from the sea and the man from above.
They held one another. In silence they wept,
both knowing their secret must always be kept.
With a vow that their hearts wouldn't ever be free,
the Mermaid returned to her home in the sea.
The sound of her music fell silent that day
as the two men reluctantly drifted away.
The years slowly passed while the friends grew apart,
and the story remained in the old Captain's heart.
But one day, he finally spoke of that night.
He wanted to wait ‘till the moment was right.
He offered his story to someone he knew
he could trust with the secret . . .
That someone is you.
