Would you do the right thing?

Years ago when I was younger, I found a wallet that conatined 182 dollars. I brought it home & told my parents, they told me the "right thing to do" was to call the person whose name was in the wallet and tell them to come & pick it up, I did. The person came & got the wallet, & for my honesty & trouble I got a whole dollar reward from that person.

Today, with the world being like it is, if you found a wallet with several hundred dollars in it, "WOULD YOU DO THE RIGHT THING" & call the owner?

I would return the wallet. Not only because of course I think its the right thing to do. At this age probobly more because of being aware. There are many times I can remember when that 182.00 was probobly the only money my dad had in the world. And so it represented a whole week of security for us his family.

Now, I would call and return it. But I have to say, when I was younger, I probably would have kept it. When I was younger I had that mind frame "finders keepers, losers weepers." Im sure a few others would say the same. But now, I'd return it.

Well.. I would have to return it. I mean that could be all the money the person has to last the week.. and besides that it would be wrong to keep it.. just like stealing fromthe person if you did. No reason to even ask the question.. WWJD..(What Would Jerry Do) in this case..

I would be a memory in the persons mind forever, upon returning their money. I always say it could be your father?

I'd have to return it. My theory is that if I kept the $182 knowing it wasn't mine to keep, something would happen that would end up costing me $364.

Wallet Karma...it's happened to me. I found a wallet in the Mall, handed into the community police station.

About three months later I lost my wallet, fell out of my coat...I wasn't concerned about the $$ but the ID and credit cards...big worry..Next thing I know the police are calling me telling me they have my wallet and to come and pick it up! haha

There was a story on the NEWS here about some kids who found a bank deposit with thousands of dollars in it. They were buying popsicles and found it in the store freezer...they gave it back to the owner and he ended up giving them a bag of skittles for a reward. I thought that was kind of cheap, he could have at least given them $20 each plus thier popsicles.

nes story this am of a guy getting his wallet back after 27 years all intact.

Me I would return it 100% because it ain't mine, and the person who lost it would be forever greatful cause replacing ID is the biggest pain in the world (ok besides divorce ) and it would feel good to me to know I aws not a greedy SOB and kept someone elses property and $$. If I got a reward great if not I would still feel good about the deed I did.

If it was a wallet, sure. If it was a paper bag with 5 grand in it, I'd turn

it in to my public safety department. Might be drug money. If nobody came

to claim it, then after I think 3 months, it would go to me!

I once found a wallet with $300 in it at a tennis court when I was 18. I found and returned it to the owner and he gave me a $5 reward, which was nice, but I didn't really care, I had lots of money of my own at the time. I had a good job and almost no overhead.

Later, when I was 28, and totally destitute, I found a wallet with $800 in it. I took the $800 and left the wallet where I found it. I paid my rent (keeping myself from becoming homeless that very week) and bought food, and fixed my car, so that I could get a job. I told myself "The Lord will provide." and never gave it another thought. (I have a funny conscience that way.)

If I was to find one now, I'd turn it in again. I have money and a good career now.

Apparently, my morals fluctuate to fit my financial situation. Oh well! :o

My sister has a great saying: "Karma's a b!tch." I'd have to return the wallet, money intact. The guilt I'd feel over keeping the money would be harder to live with than the pleasure of anything I could buy with it.

I'd probably keep half the cash and turn the wallet into the nearest Police Station. That would appease my greed and honesty at the same time.

I found money when i was about 7 years old, (long time ago!) a £20 note, just lying on the pavement - so i picked it up, am sure i was thinking i was rich and what worldly goods i could buy with this thing. I raced home to show my mum - and she tells me that she will look after it...........and i never saw this ticket to a cindy doll again/ or was it a barbie? Anyways, it wasn't in a wallet and it never occured to me to return it, i would have had no way of knowing who it belonged to anyway.

Few years ago on my way home from the pub with friends, i did find a handbag in a shop doorway, so we took it to the police station. Never heard anymore about that either, but i do hope the owner got everything back ok. I didn't even check what was in the bag, felt like an invasion of privacy.

CARS, :driving:

I had much the same experience as you. Actually I find stuff all the time, some I can get back to the owner(ID is with the wallet). Some I can't. but I always make an effort to do so.

About a month ago I found a $20 dollar bill just laying in the parking spot I was turning into at work. I picked it up took it inside the office got on the PA system asking if anyone lost a $20 in the parking lot that I had it, and come to my desk to get it.

WELL EVERYONE CAME.. BUT ONLY TO SAY WHAT AN HONEST THING TO DO..TO WHICH I SAID MY DAD ALWAYS TAUGHT US TO RETURN WHAT ISN'T OURS. TREAT OTHER AS YOU WOULD WANT TO BE TREATED FIRST AND FOREMOST, HONESTY IS ALWAYS THE BEST POLICY..SO I ENDED UP WITH THE $20... :D

A good few years ago now, a diamond ring was handed in in at the youth group I was at, it's valued at £500-£700.

As it was lost on site it was kept on site and not handed to the police, people who had been visiting had been contacted to say a ring had been found and to this day I am still prepared to return it to it's rightful owner should they ever claim it.

For now though I take good care of it.

LETHA,

My mother worked at SAN DIEGO STATE COLLEGE for years in food services. One day she looked down and saw a HUGE ring. She thought nothing of it, put it in lost and found and forgot about it. Well it was never claimed so they gave it to her. We had it appraised it was worth $5,000.00 dollars.. We had it rest and she now has it.

We figured it may have been stolen.. and that is why no one claimed it. ;)

i arrested this nasty transient guy for stealing in a local store. he steals portable CD players and trades them for booze. he had a brand-new expensive bicycle chained to a tree outside the store, i knew the bike was stolen. this guy was well-known to me, living in the woods and stealing bikes from college kids (this is a college town.) after i took him to the jail i went back and cut the chain and took the bike. i notified our SO of the serial numbers, called the city PD and beach PD and notified them as well. i thought some poor college kid must be looking for his/her bike. well nobody ever came forward, no report made on the bike. so after a few months i was asked what i wanted to do, i made sure a needy college student received it. and every time i see the same guy i make sure he sees me taking down 'his' bike numbers. he hates me. :D

In the first case I will return it to the owner. In second case I will pass it on to some social/religious organization.

Walking the dogs i found a bag containing various items including a couple of passports, i phoned the police and they contacted the owner, she'd just got home from a trip to Ireland and had it stolen whilst shopping.

That same evening she came to my home & gave me a beautiful bouquet of flowers and bottle of Champagne, she was so happy to have her passports returned.

It really made me feel good & made me smile all evening :D :D

A personal wallet I would return without hesitation or if there wasn't any ID I would hand it in at the police station.

I had an instance not long ago where I collected some money for work from our Corporate account. Hours later the cashier rang me and asked if she had given me too much money. After counting, it was found she had given me £400 too much. When counting the money out she had given me the pile of money she should've put back in the till aswell as my money. Being as helpful as I am, I went back to the bank to hand the money back. The bank manager was waiting for me and ushered me in a room. He asked me discreetly if there was only £400 as they were actually £450 down. He also said he could understand if I had 'kept' some hoping it would be missed. Well you could understand why I blew into a rage and threw the money at him. I never received an apology for that after complaining to the head office. :-5

Should anything like that happen again I would rather give the money to charity than return it to a bank. :)

I understand and appreciate your reaction to the bitter experience with the bank manager. There are such people because of whom people loose faith in each other. But we should move on and keep on doing right.

I had a similar problem many years ago, with a bank teller & manager. I was in a hurry after waiting over 20 minutes in line to cash my paycheck, as I had 3 of my buddies waiting for me in my car parked outside to go out to lunch. The teller gave me my money, & since I was so long I just took it & stuffed it in my pocket. I paid for lunch out of money from my wallet, and when returning back to work I finally got to count the money in my pocket to put it my wallet. Well afting counting it, I was short changed $20. That was a lot of money 25 years ago. So I called the Bank teller & told her of the short count, & she told me that I would have to call back after the bank closed, that's when they tallied up the cash drawer. I called back, & the teller told me the cash drawer balanced out correctly. I then spoke to the manager, and was told the same thing! "They" made $20 off me!!! :-5

From that day forward I make the teller count out my return money "slowly" in front of me!!!
