The collisions in the Large Hadron Collider will have an energy content that's equivalent to that of a cosmic ray hitting the earth with an energy of 10¹7eV. We've measured cosmic rays hitting the earth with energies of up to 10²ºeV, in other words, these experiments that are intended to be performed in the LHC are really nothing new.

Certainly, many things could go wrong... under strictly monitored conditions there shouldn't be much of a concern. Similar experiments have been done without incident, however.
