Those of you in the UK who think that the House of Lords is just a talking shop will be glad to hear that they have given His Tonyness another good kicking today. The bill that would have allowed terror SUSPECTS to be put under house arrest on the say so of politicians got stuffed again.

I am all for locking up genuine terror suspects but let it go before the judiciary, Phoney Tony's argument is that the evidence is provided by the security services and cannot be put in the public domain, fine, let an unlected, unbiaised jusge see it rather than a bloody cabinet minister.

remember, not only has justice to BE done it has to be SEEn to be done.

No wonder His Tonyness wants to get rid of the upper house.

Hear hear! We are battling the same thing here in the States.

There is always a way to battle terrorism without going into a police state mentality. Ben Franklin's over-used quote of: "Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." rings true today.

Not quite yet, it goes back to the commons. Who knows maybe we'll see the parliament act get used again.

It's because there are ex-Canadians in it.

They have done this precisely because the house of lords has the power to say to politicians 'uh ha this aint going to be law'. It has lost some of it's power, but obviously it still has enough to stand up and be counted. I think im right in saying that BLAIR himself can override them though. Maybe this is just a show by the gov't to fool us into believing that the lords stll has clout. Who knows with BLIAR and his pals. I wouldnt trust them with your daughter let alone mine.

No he can't. We have a parliamentary democracy, the commons can override the Lords using the parliament act like they did with the ban on hunting. Tony Blair is the PRIME MINISTER first among equals supposedly and has no authority other than that parliament let's him away with. If they vote against it there is nothing he can do.
