Judge: Girl's name, Talula Does The Hula, won't do

11:28 PM CDT on Thursday, July 24, 2008

Associated Press

WELLINGTON, New Zealand - A family court judge in New Zealand has had enough with parents giving their children bizarre names here, and did something about it.

Just ask Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii. He had her renamed.

Judge Rob Murfitt made the 9-year-old girl a ward of the court so that her name could be changed, he said in a ruling made public Thursday. The girl was involved in a custody battle, he said.

The new name was not made public to protect the girl's privacy.

"The court is profoundly concerned about the very poor judgment which this child's parents have shown in choosing this name," he wrote. "It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap, unnecessarily."

The girl had been so embarrassed at the name that she had never told her closest friends what it was. She told people to call her "K" instead, the girl's lawyer, Colleen MacLeod, told the court.

In his ruling, Murfitt cited a list of the unfortunate names.

Registration officials blocked some names, including Fish and Chips, Yeah Detroit, Keenan Got Lucy and Sex Fruit, he said. But others were allowed, including Number 16 Bus Shelter "and tragically, Violence," he said.

New Zealand law does not allow names that would cause offense to a reasonable person, among other conditions, said Brian Clarke, the registrar general of Births, Deaths and Marriages.

Clarke said officials usually talked to parents who proposed unusual names to convince them about the potential for embarrassment.

Thats so very sad. People have enough to contend with in life without parents setting them up with a white elephant name.

Im all for being individual and unusual but thats so mean.

Friend of a friend has called their beautiful daughter Mushroom??? The son is called Broccoli...???

Poor kid, the judge should insist that the parents have new names, published ones, how about -

"Talula" would been fine but the rest not necessary, poor kid. I have an unusual first name and it was no fun in school at all when people butchered it. As an adult I can deal with it, but kids do suffer if their names bring them attention in a bad way. :(

Wow. It's good that New Zealand has judges around to let us know when we've exceeded the allotted quota of freedom, huh? Especially ones with upstanding, respectable, unfunny names like Murfitt.

Then one night I was watching the show Cops and they were on it for being drunk and beating eachother up.

Boy what a couple of losers they turned out to be.

Who would think that a judge has more right to decide a child's name than the parents??

But that's the child exercising his/her right of identity. The judge in that case is deciding if the child has more right than the parents. The judge is still not the guy in charge and never should be.

My ex husband's school mate's name was Nova.

I think there has to be a limit on naming a child. If you have to be a moron and name them something that will humiliate them forever make it their middle name.

As for the judge deciding I dunno Acc at 9 this poor girl could not and would not reveal her legal name, not sure down under but here in Canada you have to be the age of majority to get a name change so I think the judge did her a huge favor.

I don't have an unusual name by any means but I was often frustrated with people not saying it proper or spelling it right. For 20 years I was the only Melanie I knew, but boy people liked to call me melody, melony, melaney etc UGH!!!

My brother has a femanine first name, he goes by his middle name.

My daughter's name is Cecelia. But, at the school she goes to they always spell it Cecilia like the Saint. Very frustrating that you would think year after year that I have to correct them and they keep spelling it the saint way. Actually got into an argument with one of the teachers there over the spelling and her response was "I've never seen it spelled with the two "e's". But I have seen it numerous times and then the topper is my hubby has the girl's names on the front of his trucks and the painter did the same thing after repeated attempts to tell him "we don't spell it that way either", and guess what the pr*ck did, yup put the wrong spelling on the truck. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
