My congratulations to Lance Corporal Croucher, I can't imagine anyone more worthy of the honour.A Royal Marine who threw himself on a grenade to save his comrades' lives is to receive the George Cross.

Lance Corporal Matthew Croucher, 24, from Solihull, in the West Midlands triggered a trip wire in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, in February. He immediately dropped to the ground and lay across the grenade, being blown into the air as it went off. The George Cross is one of the highest decorations that can be awarded for acts of gallantry.

L/Cpl Croucher said: "All I could do in the moment was shout out 'grenade' before diving on top of it." His bag was crammed with equipment which cushioned the explosion. His three comrades suffered just cuts and bruises while L/Cpl Croucher was thrown in the air. He added: "It was incredible. I escaped with only a nose bleed and a headache."

The man and the deed are definitely deserving of highest honors. I'm just surprised that you agree, Spot, after your tirades about how evil it is to vonluntarily join a standing military on foreign soil.

You're really going for my jugular, aren't you. I'd not have posted it had I not felt moved to. I'm immensely impressed by his heroism.

I've just been and read what I wrote in that thread.

I wrote 1,350 words in that thread.

I could either quote it all and make my point, or I could quote the heart of it and make the same point, which would you prefer? Let's try the heart statement:It's completely unethical to join any armed force that can contractually deploy outside of the Homeland borders, all the more so when it actually does just that with such monotonous frequency. What on earth has that to do with heroism? Or my desire to express my appreciation of it and my admiration of the marine's action? If you can find a link then fine, let's talk about it. I can't see one at all.

I have it in mind he must be the most surprised man on the planet. A headache and a nosebleed?

Not many people get into that position. He's one of the few who knows how he'd react.

I guess the more important point is that you recognize heroism whatever your rhetoric regarding hypotheticals.
