BURGLARS should NOT be jailed but face soft community sentences instead, an official report said yesterday.

In a bombshell move, Government advisers said prison should no longer be used for burglary, “less serious thefts or motoring offences.

Crooks who carry out these crimes should get away with a few weeks work in the community or a curfew.

The explosive recommendation is hidden away in the new report from the Sentencing Advisory Panel. It also says some burglars should not be caged even if it is believed they will commit further offences.

Shocked critics last night warned the recommendations would give the green light to housebreakers. The panel’s 148-page report calls for an overhaul of punishments for certain offences.

It declares: “A presumption in favour of a community order is most likely to be appropriate in relation to the less serious offences of theft and dishonesty, burglary and motoring offences. It adds: “There may be clear advantages in requiring an offender to serve a sentence in the community.

The report also voices concern about the way courts sometimes do NOT give jail sentences to criminals because they risk losing their jobs.

The Tories last night said people would be horrified by the recommendations on burglars.

Shadow Justice Secretary Nick Herbert stressed: “People rightly expect that offenders who invade their home will be dealt with severely.

“They have little confidence in weak community sentences which too often aren’t even properly enforced.

Meanwhile, Britain’s new top judge has told magistrates to impose the TOUGHEST possible sentences on people caught with knives.

Sir Igor Judge’s hard-hitting message has been sent to every JP in the country.

The new Lord Chief Justice said every knife on the streets was a “public danger and therefore had to be stopped. unquote
