Legal Question

My friend just got served for credit card debt to the tune of over $4000. He had been paying it off but there was grievance between him and the c/c company, they started harassing him and he stopped paying. Then he married my friend so his debt is now hers too. The summons reads "Bob Smith" and "Jane Doe Smith" so they got her either way.
She called me for information but I didn't know what to tell her other than get an attorney so at the very least they won't end up screwed over because they didn't understand the legalese. They're not disputing that they owe the money but the summons also says they will be responsible for the c/c company's legal fees at no less than $1100.
I've seen legal firms that deal with credit card issues but darned if I can remember any now.
Does anyone have any advice I could give my friends? Or know of anything they may not think of? They're already in financial straits and this isn't helping. Thank you.
