Beyond me!! Feline Leukemia

Two years ago we were sadly told that our new kitten had feline leukemia. We stayed close to the vets with him, had him on meds to hopefully boost his immune system, but sadly he died at 6 months old ... it was a horrible death, and after 2 days of trying everything at the vets, we finally had do the right right thing for him. DH was with him when we had him put to sleep (I had to stay with my kids ... they were devastated).

When we found out about the leukemia we told the owner of the mother and advised her to tell the other owners of the kittens - as this is highly contagious and deadly. Well the whole litter died.

Since then the mother has been allowed to be an outdoor cat - spreading the disease. She has been allowed to have 3 more litters since then. Imagine how this one cat has spread this deadly disease. Why .... whats wrong with people!!

Report that woman to animal control because she is endangering other cats and is being cruel to animals as well. Don't just let it slide by.

ETA: Not to mention, have you any idea the toll all those pregnancies take on a cat harboring FLV?! :(

I will Terri ... do you think they will do anything about it. You would not believe the attitude towards animals where I live. I really wish I had known. This is another thing to add to my changing things thread ... it's just too much

Well, I don't know Pheasy, but it's worth a try. I understand what you're saying. We have that same attitude toward animals out here too. Any chance you could snag the mother cat and get her spayed then returned? Of course they'd probably just pimp out the kittens. Arrgh! People!!!

Well the other night they shot their other cat (after digging his hole) ... I have never lived anywhere where it seems hopeless.

I know in older times if you lived on a farm or something, it wasn't uncommon to shoot your pet if he was beyond help or if you were too poor or cheap to afford helping him but times have changed! Apparently not with these people! I hope something can be done about them. That's just despicable. I completely feel for you having to live near that crap and not being able to pound these induhviduals into the modern age!! :-5 :-5:-5

Awful RG made a good suggestion report them to the SPCA for have animals that have disease and for shooting an animal I don't think that is legal. Worth a try this is awful.

This is a terrible story.

Here, I feel as though we are banging our heads against a brick wall with ( many ) cat owners. The say they are cat owners/ cat lovers.. then leave the cats outdoors day and night , but blame car drivers when an animal gets run over dashing across the road.

They moan about dog poo but let their cat do its thing in everyones garden regardless of the risks to children.

They moan about dogs barking but cats in season are left to howl in the streets.

Our local paper/pound/internet ad site is overwhelmed with kittens.

Vaccination, now leave a child or a dog un-vaccinated and people will look at you as if you are the devil himself but if you suggest they vaccinate a cat they laugh in your face.

I think some serious education is needed among these people.

No offence intended to good cat owners or indeed the innocent in all of this, the poor cat.
