It's been through some interesting times over the last hundred years has Russia. I'm delighted the Russians are still at it, they're a great people.

It will be interesting indeed to see how this new broom will bring his country forward. Well, onwards and upwards as we say.

Perhaps we should warm up this thread for next year - Dmitry Medvedev has expressed a desire to become the Russian Prime Minister in 2012. And why not, he's a sensible chap.
Did anyone notice "More than 200 international observers, from 32 countries, are monitoring voting across Russia" in the opening post? It should be common to all national elections across the world. Every country should have their voting process vetted and observed by neutral external referees.

Trouble would be in finding neutral referees in many cases

Neutrality is definitely the issue when concerning Russia it seems. Nothing Russia does is right in the eyes of many powerful entities. They could save the world and somebody would blame them for doing it wrong. Some pundit recently had the gall to berate the Russians for not having a huge ceremony to mourn the victims of 9/11 this year. Did anyone in America have a ceremony for the children of Beslan in America? How many Americans would even know what it was?
I really don't see the point of elections in Russia, it's not a democracy. I'd just call it a benign dictatorship (not unlike the Romans) and oligarchy combined with elements of mafia style power structures.

Even if the results rarely matter it's my opinion that over the last twenty years they've been honest reflections of the electorate's intention, and without that expression the Communist Party wouldn't have become discredited for those crucial years when they lost hold. Russia has become more complex without the Party grip. I'd be delighted to see it voted back eventually and I reckon Russia's capable of doing that if the Party finds the right leader. It would be a pleasing outcome.
