I saw this on the bbc website yesterday and it does look very much like someone walking across but i think it could be the way the rocks are and the angle of the camera.

Yes, it looks like someone is sunbathing naked on the rock there, they must be pretty cold though (you know, bout minus 50 degrees celcius cold), and of course they are probably a bit short of breath seeing as there is hardly any atmosphere and its all CO2 anyway, they are probably a bit thirsty as well . Maybe they are made of rock and can breath low pressure CO2, though why they would then look quite similar to a casually posed naked human sunbather is another mystery. You would also think that if you were a rock alien living on Mars and you saw this strange little metal Earth robot roving around taking pictures and generally being a annoyance, you would be a little curious and would amble over to have a look, at least to hit it a kick. Though maybe aliens are kinda vain and prefer sunbathing to investigating alien robots landing on their little dust planet.

Oh by the way, nice one for the Spurs the other night, you must be chuffed. Crouch ruined my Monday evening I can tell ya, we had them scousers on the run. Anyway, back to life on other planets.

There is certainly a possibility that there is bacterial life on Mars though, but it would have to be sub surface in the soil, the best chance of any larger life forms would be Europa, the moon of Jupiter, as it looks like there is a high likelihood of their being liquid water under its frozen surface, and if you are looking for life you need liquid water. The water being liquid is crucial for lots of good biological and physical reasons, but they are too involved to get into here.

There may be other more exotic forms of life that are not based on any biology that we can understand, but they would be so beyond our understanding their isn't much point postulating about it as we have no frames of reference for what they would be, we probably wouldn't even know they were life if we encountered them.
