PC Audio Playing Too Fast

Just picked up a used Dell after my trusty old IBM had a nervous breakdown.
It came to me with a VLC Media Player, and an old version of Windows Media Player that I immediately upgraded.
When I listened to a streaming radio station on the VLC (it was set as the default player), it was playing approximately 10% too fast.
It also plays my MP3s too fast, again about 10%.
The newly upgraded Windows Media Player is doing the same thing.
The radio station and the MP3s were fine on the old IBM. (I generally used RealPlayer, and occasionally, WMP).
Can't seem to find any obvious pitch or speed adjustments.
What gives? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
