I'm sure there will be some who will be unhappy with me for calling this ignorant but when I read the following snippet that is the best I can say about it:
According to Lukman Hakim, the foundation’s chairman of social services, there are three “benefits to circumcising girls.
“One, it will stabilize her libido, he said through an interpreter. “Two, it will make a woman look more beautiful in the eyes of her husband. And three, it will balance her psychology.

I just saw this and I agree with the original Poster but Im unsure if the facts are correct about the reasons of how it came about.
Amputating children's healthy sex organs is insane. It violates human rights & human beings. Medical circumcising was a mistake of 19th century quacks. They were trying to stop children from masturbating (which they thought caused insanity) by inflicting massive genital pain and amputating "excessive" sexual pleasure. Circumcising traumatizes, wounds, cripples & kills. It doesn't prevent sickness, it causes sickness. It IS sickness. One sickness it causes is the sickness it is. End it now.

Must admit he goes off on one a bit but I agree with most of his views.
Their are times medically when circumcising for a male is needed, skin too tight ect but other than that. leave it to how nature intended I say

I was working in a major hospital when women started showing up in ER's from complications from this procedure. It is babaric and the consequences are awful. Many are done in less then sterile places and more than just a bit is removed.

Of course it's barbaric Carla. What's inflammatory is to call it Muslim. That's like calling fox-hunting a Christian practice instead of a British practice. Fox-hunting's a cultural aspect of British life, not of Christian life. The fact that 90+% of the people who do it would call themselves Christian isn't relevant.
By all means refer to what's happening in the article as Indonesian Female Circumcision, or criticize Somali Female Circumcision, or preferably drop the naming of the culture and just attack Female Circumcision. Fox-hunting overlaps predominantly Christian societies, Female Circumcision overlaps predominantly Muslim societies, the religion's incidental to the cultural act in both cases.

Spot you are correct indeed. I changed my post to women of no patricular religion. Thank you for pointing this out.
