I think it's relative, Buttercup.

Meaning on one hand, yes, why should you pay a thousand for a dog when you can rescue one from the pound, usually just as good, for much less?

That said, can we really put a monetary figure on another living creature?

Breeders charge an arm and a leg because (they'll tell you) they want to recoup some of the cost of food, vitamins, doctor visits they've put into their dog, but good respectable breeding costs money and it's done out of love of breed, not with intent to get rich.

Another reason for big bux is that decent breeders want to "make sure" their dog goes to someone who invested a bit into him. It's a type of screening tool. Even that doesn't always work though.

Then you do have the types who just want to get "rich."

I can't believe I used the term respectable breeding. That is such an oxymoron for me.

Overpriced?

The love from my dogs is priceless.. They cost me nothing but someone paid big money for a pedigree dog (one border collie, one beagle) and then when it didn't suit them or live up to their expectations they took out that frustration on the dog.

Breeders know whats hot and whats not, and whats hot this year will cost you money. A lot of the money you are asked to pay is for a 'hot' fashion item ( Paris Hilton and the chihuahua) unfortunately the dog is the real 'fashion victim'.
