Would you be so kind as to explain to me, seeing I am new and all, what the four stars represent of the forum thread that has been the focus of so much attention? Is it a good thing (those stars = 4.0) a bad thing, or just pretty stars?
Thanks!
I agree with the whole idea of friendship and am surprised so many were ready to draw blood when a simple question is asked in a proper format.

So are you supporting Ladycop, or admonishing us for our response to the "unnamed" member? Or both? Because if it's the former, I'll stand right by you and continue my support. If it's the latter, I'll tell you that AS friends to each other, that's what we did, and I'd do it exactly the same way if it happened again. I've seen newbies get WAY worse tongue lashings than what this member received when they pop in and just cause crap. I wasn't around for the initial dispute, but when I came on here and saw LC asking if she should leave, I was insensed. As I read the thread, I was livid. So, your hopes for this never happening again mirror my own. However, if someone were to dump on someone I consider a friend here, they better be ready to get the tongue lashing that is going to follow.
One of the things that makes this such a good forum is the respect that is shown. But you have to give it to get it. Sounding like a pompous, arrogant, self-important boob is not showing respect.

thanks for your offer of apologies in case you've ever offended anyone. that is the sign of an evolved personality. recognizing that one's behavior might be offensive, and proactively apologizing, shows respect for others, over and above whatever may be or have been discussed. a forum _participant_ is interested in exchanging ideas. a forum _troll_ is interested in getting attention. You can tell a troll because they'll use anything and everything possible to 'bait' other people - and they will not drop it. just watch. you'll see a response to this post, blathering away about how erudite and intelligent a person he is, for having stirred up the pot here. mock shock at what i'm writing now. he will not be able to keep from doing so - the lack of self-control is part and parcel to the disease. the reality is, it's all a ploy for attention. at this moment, i'm giving him some. the true test will be whether the arse posts a followup. if he does, he's confirmed his identity as merely a troll.
QED.

Godiva and I are both brand new here, but I have to say that the thing that impressed me right off the bat, (and caused me to neglect my own forum, BTW) was the courtesy shown here.
It's tough to talk about sensitive subjects like politics, religion, and child-rearing without getting emotional.
But even at the most intense level, the members here seem to try very hard not to resort to flaming, or take posts personally. I must say that I was taken aback at the support you all gave LC. You just don't see that much other boards, my own included I'm sad to say. I'm proud to be with you, and respect you all very much.
You know this very thing came to my mind today. (I ,too, was rather distressed that someone had actually flamed LC, since my opinion of her had skyrocketed in the short time I had been here) A little girl that is currently mad at me in my classroom (because I told her parents she was ditching school) insulted me to my face.
I was dressed as Pythagorus (toga and leaves) and she said loudly, "You look like an idiot, Mr. Ives." My first reaction was to be a little hurt. I went to a lot of trouble to make a fun lesson, and verbal abuse was not what I expected.
But then I remembered the source. I replied, "Yes, don't I though? One nice thing about being old, you get to look idiotic and you don't care." "Besides," I told her, "I'd get fired on other jobs if I dressed this way. Look how much fun I get to have here!" and I smiled broadly.
The poor dumbfounded girl sat down, a quizzical expression on her face as she tried to understand why her insult hadn't worked.
I think she learned powerful lessons on both being an adult and being deliberately hurtful.

You may find a small menu on thread pages which allows you to 'rate this thread' with a number between 1-5.
Casting a vote for threads you view is entirely optional, but if you think that the thread is superb, you might rate it as a 5-star thread, or if you think that it's unspeakably dismal, you might choose to rate the thread with a single star.
Once enough votes have been cast for the thread rating, you may see a set of stars appear with the title of the thread in the thread listings. These stars reflect the average vote cast, and can allow you to quickly see which threads are worth reading if you are on a very busy forum with a lot of threads.

Raven wrote: right as rain, you are. just read the 'other' thread.........troll is as troll does.
the true, hidden beauty of the formula i described at the end of my post is this: even if he *doesn't* post a followup, he'll still be proving he's a troll. how so?
he's posted relentlessly the past day and a half. something like a hundred posts. go anywhere, you'll find him trying to stir up the shite. he's already posted once in this thread. we know his modus operandi. so if he *doesn't* post a followup here, it means he knows he's the troll being discussed, and thus not-posting means he's trying not to let me 'win' (such a childish mentality - 'winning' at discussion).
so it's QED with a double-reverse-hect-mambo-QED all in one.
the only way a post in this thread by him would not confirm his trollness would be a genuine, sincere apology to all here at Forumgarden who have been here more than 36 hours, and who don't go around stirring the shite just for the sake of getting attention. and a promise to actually _participate_ rather than engaging in random acts of self-aggrandizement and thoughtless acts of sophomoric humor.

To all intelligent forms of comprehension, please analyze the statement above!
There you have it.
The most senior posting (and a paying) member who has refused to take a side through out has now resorted to ...
insults as his format and process of deliberation.
You are absolutely correct. I do not belong here. The wild guy from Canada who said I was too good for this site and far too intelligent ... is correct. However, I pay respect to the those who have posted intellingent threads of logic and sensibility such as Bill Sikes, Jives, Godiva Girl, Eric N. and several others. The gentleman from California, and not Anenthopre (sp) who said I sound like a law student, well you are darn close to being correct, just slightly off.
Capt. Buzzard, your post is a disappointment. You do not represent the Ireland I know.
This is your response and you are the senior member. I am disappointed. I thought you, Capt. Buzzard, were above that.
Okay, now, before being banned, I am ready for all your juvenile retorts based on insults and uneducated emotions. Ready ..... GO
At least I retained my integrity and dignity through out.

Geez but you're a pompous, self-important boob, ain't ya? The garden being a source of constant disappointment to you is truly distressing for me. You have not opened your mind even the teeniest bit to what is good and fun and friendly about this place. You waltz in, throw your garbage around, posturing all the while, and expect to receive a warm welcome?? And when someone walks into your home, throws trash on the floor and insults your family, how do you react?? Open your eyes for just the briefest moment and pay attention to what you have said and done here. Why is this such a complicated thing for you to grasp?? For all your big words, you don't seem all that bright to me, given your responses here. :-5

I don't know what happened either, and I don't care to know. I'd like to say this though...it's great that we can all agree, it's great that we can disagree, and it's great that we can agree to disagree.
Just because someone has a different opinion, dosen't mean that they are wrong, or you are wrong, it just means that we all think different, which makes a great community...hell we might even learn something from one another *gasp*
LC, please don't leave, your posts contribute something valuable to this community, I've only been here about a week, but I can see you have a ot of wisdom to offer this forum.
