Quite strong words with acidic proportions. I guess the future King of England should get on with his life. I see nothing wrong with that.

Yes you're right and I agree with you who cares. In theory the queen could refuse to sign a bill which act is what officially makes it law. No written constitutioin remember.

It's his future position as the head of the Church of England that upsets some people not just here but in those parts of the commonwealth that are anglican. First they wanted gay bishops now they want a divorcee as titular head many take these things to heart.

true enough - but then, isn't that also little more than an 'in name only' sort of thing? i do understand folks getting their knickers in a knot (tip o' the fez to der wulf over in the 'liberal bias' topic), but golly - it always seems that people tend to get their knickers in a knot more easily the fewer other servicable issues there really are.

Unfortunately, no. They can (and have in the past) exerted very real influence on the democratic process in this country. They are undemocratic, expensive, and unnecessary. The sooner we get rid of them, the better.

Key phrase in the past, mind you you never knows what goes on behind closed doors. Would be inclined to agree but not convinced the alternative would be much better, Somebidy like Tony Blair would design a cinstitution with too few checks, currently we are in the ludicrous position where unelected lords and judges are stopping the givt behaving like tin pot dictators. Hope they stop the ID card nonsense.

Parliament Act for one 1906? without the threat from the king to pack the lords with liberal MP's the lords would never have passed it. Invergordon mutiny, released documents show the king intervened to persuade the mutineers to cool it and defused the situation as the admiralty were shitting themselves and were all for blowing them out the water.

60 and 70 year old documents recently released, that's why there is so much now about ww2 coming out. freedom of information act has opened up a lot of formerly closed archives.

I think comments about Camilla's looks are just downright mean.

Prince Charles didn't always do things the right way. He might have been

pretty much of a rotter when he married Diana. They were definitely

unsuited to each other. But I had heard that towards the end of Diana's

life, she and Charles had actually formed an amicable relationship. And

I thought a lot of him when he went to get her after her death and return

her to her country, apparently against his mother's wishes.

Camilla will never be queen. She seems very happy to be getting married.

We've all made mistakes, haven't we? It must be very hard to love someone

and due to circumstances not be able to be married. I think they must be

very much in love and a good match, and I wish them all the best.

But as they have shown no hesitation to use these powers in the past, what guarantee do we have they will not be used in the future? Particularly if we get Charles on the throne. Any constitutional change would be a public affair. I doubt that Blair is stupid enough to try and influence its design. And if you want the government to stop acting like 'tin pot dictators' - get the crown out of our political system. Its existence allows such dictatorial behavior.

None

TB is a control freak and the dictatorial behavious is a result of our BLoIU MP's forgetting what they are supposedly there to do. I'm all in favour of electorlal reform just wary of the form it would take. especially with TB in charge.

Let's have PR first so it would have to be a public affair.

The law lords ruled last week that such detentions were unlawful under the European convention on human rights. Lord Hoffman said: ‘‘The real threat to the life of the nation, in the sense of a people living in accordance with its traditional laws and political values, comes not from terrorism but from laws such as these.’’

We are in the ludocrous poistion of having an unelected gropup of judges protecting us from the excesses of our own government. Left to blunkett et al they would do what they are told or they wouldn't get their job in the first place.

Don't know about Wales but in Scotland the Tories are all in favour of PR as it is the only way they can get seats in the scottish parliament.

Edward's refusal to acknowledge Wallace as a worthy enemy from a separate country meant that the English could officially regard Wallace as a traitor to the English nation so there!!!

In addition On Aug 5 1305, Wallace was betrayed by a Scottish knight

plus which if Wallace was 6 ft 6 in how come that aussie midget Mel Gibson got to play him.

I am off now to hide from my 70 year old mother and proud scot who will now dis own me :)

He was so terrified of Wallace he had to invent a particularly nasty death to try and terrify his supporters.

In addition On Aug 5 1305, Wallace was betrayed by a Scottish knight

very true If more scots knew their own history they would stop blaming the English and lynch all the remaining aritiocrats and descendants of clan chieftains and edinbirgh lawyers. The parcel 'o' rogues are stiil at it. Don't forget how they tried to write him out of history.

Not being used to idiomatic Britticisms about Scottish vernacular could I be so bold as to suggest that perhaps you are saying that the average Scottish soldier after he disses his grey-haired heritage will get, "smacked upside the head?" Or something like that?

Maybe you should change your name to confused from Canada cos you've got me confused. Whup your butt sounds rude. I now have a confused picture of canadian grandmothers standing out in the snow whipping their water butts, sheesh and I thought americans were eccentric

You could have your work cut out, depends what you mean by UK expressions. There are many different regional dialects-not just accents- to contend with, the north of England has several, Yorkshire, lancashire, geordie, We all modify our accents when speaking to each other and write very differently from the way we speak. Scots and the North of England have more in common with each other than they do with the South of England we also speak at different speeds just to really confuse things.

Get out a copy of trainspotting-I gather that in the US they released it with subtitles the producers having refused to redub it for the american market. or a Billy Connolly tape or Roy Chubby brown and you'll see what I mean.

We get a lot of american tourists in Edinburgh, you see them when they talk to the locals with this kind of rabbit in the headlights expression and can almost see them thinking What the R%$^ did he just say. Brigadoon it aint.

Looks like the Australians will be going republican in the near future.

Hate to say it Abbey but the one accent I cannot bear is the Mockney we seem to hear from reading down to essex coast, I blame "Eastenders" and Jamie Oliver. The BBC has recently been airing it's archive of regional dialects collected over 60 years and it was great.

I am fascinated by accents, how come one side of Metal Bridge is Cumbrian the other side is Borders, Go the 1.5 miles across the Severn Bridge and you go from west country to welsh. I have to say my favourites to listen to are Bolton and Newcastle.

GMC belive me it happens the other way round, i don't think my accent is too strong but I think there was never an occasion the last time I was in the USA when I did not have to repeat what I said at least once.
