Dear Editor:
Dear Santa:
It is my understanding that the pressure the Big companies put on you in order to increase profits must be daunting. Having to put all those elves onto the unemployment line at the north pole must have been difficult. Although you were able to provide a decent wage with good benefits and working conditions you were forced to bring the work off shore.
You made a superior product but that was not good enough for the big box stores. Looks like the "MAN" got to you too. Do me and my children a favor SANTA.... Don't bring me any toys this year that are made in China. I bet you can hardly find any toys made elsewhere... maybe Rudolph can go to the island of misfits and find some there.
One more thing Santa, do you still pay yourself around 15 million just like the CEO of these big toy companies. Are the board members the Abominable Snowman, Frosty, Sam the Snowman, Hermey and Yukon Cornelius also getting paid the same. Why did you do this SANTA? Is it corporate greed??? Santa what about the people in CHINA that work with the lead paint.. do you care about them?
Sincerely,
R. J. Melan

Dear R.J Melan
Thank you for you letter, you touch on many good points.
Many of the issues however you raise are not purely from the perspective of greed on the part of companies; it is also on part due to greed of the consumers who want more and more high quality, technically advanced gifts at cheaper prices.
Gone are the days when my elves could provide wooden train sets, and hand made crafts that brought a smile to a child’s face just based on the spirit of receiving. No now parents want to provide to their children the most recently up graded computerized toys with interactive high speed modems. As the costs continue to rise due to the growing expenses of the children’s Christmas list, even I can’t afford to attract high skill labourers to the North Pole with out major expenses.
People are not prepared to pay higher prices to receive a gift just because it was made in my workshop, therefore even I need now outsource technical work which has caused major issues with the EWU (Elf Workers Union) who are putting more and more pressure on me to increase wages and benefits when the margin of profitability are shrinking tighter and tighter.
I care about all Children, and products made in China have to meet the legal quality requirements of the country which the product will be imported to, so there is no lead paint, otherwise you would not be able to give the gift to you own child.
I would be happy to bring your child a toy that is not made in China, would you be willing to pay three times the price for it??
Best Wishes
Santa Claus

Dear Mikeine:
Your reply is right on target.
We the consumers have created the enviroment that we live in today. We seem to care more about our GOLF, Soccer and Grass than what is going on.
We have this attitude that if my CUL-De Sack is o.k then I could care what is going on in the world.
Well guess what... the times are changing and we need to look at ourselves in the mirror.
What is striking in all this lead paint problem is this.
The world looks at us the United States and says why do you only care about yourselves?
HAS anybody asked this question?
Has the CEO of Matel asked this question?
Does anybody care about the employees who had to work in a factory and who is working with this LEAD PAINT?
Here we have a person who is sueing his pop corn company because the smelled the bag for TEN years and now he is sick. It got national attention...
Did the employees who make the toys for our children get one second of air time.
To answer your question.... Are we willing to pay for higher prices in toys?
Like Gasoline we complain about the prices but we adjust like the prices of toys...
we will adjust... We don't need to get so many toys for our children...
Like our parents before us and their parents before them How many toys did they get? The answer is sometimes LESS IS MORE.
Ron

Are you saying that somebody has made leadbased CRAYONS??!! For the freeking love of baby Jesus explain to me why someone would do that? There's not a child in the world that hasn't eaten a crayon or two.
I say we all take our kids down to the health clinic, have them tested for lead poisoning, then send the bill to Mattel. And don't buy anything from that company for about um maybe 72 months- long enough for them to get their values together.

I don't know that crayons are lead based.
I would need proof of that before I flipped out.

I thought of that myself! I'm catching on in my old age, haha.
One never knows about substances. I realize crayons are made of wax but knowing the history of manufacturers trying to cut corners I wonder if it could be true that fillers are used in crayon making that contain lead based products. No such thing as pure wax crayons anymore, may be the truth. Bees are history, man, didn't you hear?
