A lot of people remember where they were when President Kennedy was assassinated. What was your personal "JFK Moment" and where were you when it happened?

Mine was watching the Challenger space shuttle take off and explode in the sky. Those sickening ribbons and curls of smoke were ugly. The whole thing...devastatingly ugly. And I was at my aunt's house at the time.

I was working up near our airport when it happened.

I had to go out that day it happened and was up behind our airport and was truly truly floored by the site of about 6-8 giant american Jets sitting in our airport. It was a weird feeling the silence was deafening yet I was very proud to be in a city that accepted those american planes for protection and safe keeping.

JFK - I was in school - I remember coming home and my Mom was crying - I thought a relative died.

911 - I had a friend in NY, it was the first time she'd flown, they couldn't call out, I phoned her and of course she was very upset, she had plans to do the tourist running around that day.

I remember the silence in the air.

I was driving a hearse over the Oakland San Francisco Bay Bridge, going back to Napa after a funeral at the National Cemetery at Colma. I had just reached Treasure Island and heard it on the radio in the hearse.

I was eight years old and was attending a Sunday High School football game at Hinchcliffe Stadium in Paterson, New Jersey. I was with my dad and cousin who was in the navy and stationed at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Just before the 1 PM kickoff they announced over the speakers that the Japanese had attacked Pearl Harbor and for all military to report to their bases. When next I saw my cousin, he was a Commander, after being sunk once in the North Atlantic and then again in the Battle of the Coral Sea. The next four years were exciting times for a young kid that didn't have to go off and fight. But alas, I caught the next one in Korea.

I actually remember lady di being killed very clearly, I was living in Essex in England then, and both myself and my girlfriend of the time woke up and wen't downstairs just as the news came in from Paris. Also like everyone else, September 11th, which is a day I hope never happens again, even now those pictures and those events have a surreal quality to them, a truly terrible and unforgetable event for anyone who was alive.

I remember actually on the way home from work (we got out early), I went into a shop and the little kids were all crowded round the evening editions talking about things the way that tough Dublin kids do, and these were tough little Irish street kids, but this had got to them. One young lad said to me, "did you see it mister?" "did you see the people jumping out?". I said " I did kid", and you know what, neither of us will ever forget today, I promise you, you'll remember it the rest of your life where you were today". He just looked at me and nodded. I'll never forget that day, and I know that little kid will as well.

BTS, the way you come off, how is anyone supposed to know what you mean? I'm used to you arguing with me and everyone else and it seemed as though you wanted to say one tragedy was worse than the other.

I was too young for Kennedy but MY first Moment was the Challenger. That was the first time I realized that all was not all right with the world. That Things Go Wrong. That's what's meant by a JFK Moment.

I'd say 9/11, the death of Lady Di and the London underground bombings for me (not in any particular order) - I can remember each day very very vividly and remember what I was doing

I remember it well, as I do the Hungerford massachre (spellilng?) but cant remember what I was doing on those days

I remember that so clearly too Neffy.......I was working in my old primary school at the time too...

A very sad day......Feels like only yesterday:(

My top "JFK" moment will always be September 11th....I didn't know if my friends who worked in the twin towers were safe, thank goodness they survived. I walked around for weeks in a daze. It was so eerie...there were no planes flying above in the sky for weeks. It was as thought the world stood still. My Irish cousins were visiting rellys near Savanna and couldn't get a place back to NJ. I drove half way down to meet them.

My 2nd "JFK" moment was when the 5 young school girls were molested and killed in Lancaster, PA. They were very brave little girls. I think of them often.

There were so many more tragic events but these two were the ones that affected me the most.

ah yes I remember that day well, we were camping and my oldest daughter came from friends trailer that had a TV screaming she had died she had died, very sad day.

President Kennedy, when I was in my early teens. I was so shocked and so were my parents.

Diana in 1997, another shock

9/11, which I could just not believe was happening

and the tsunami disaster in 2004

JFK... I was in the 6th grade.. They wheeled TVs into our classrooms. It was a shock t was very very disorientating and sad.

Princess Dianna... I was vacuming.. living in a cabin in the woods.. Horiffic.

Sickening.

Sept 11th.. having coffee in the kitchen of a client. I saw the first hit, and thought.. " How the hell are they going to put THAT fire out???

Another one was John Lennon... I dont remember the year. What a loss.

I thought great people, just cant live amongst regular people.

I'm sorry I didn't understand the question either - don't think the American expression travelled to Australia, though of course we know about JFK himself and his assassination. I have deleted my earlier inappropriate reply. I went to pay my respects at the Memorial in Dallas.

If the expression means some international event which changed the world for you, I guess 9/11 has to be it. For me, the Berlin Wall coming down was also significant.

Challenger - I was at my apartment with my ex-husband (who was my boyfriend at the time). We sat & watched it over & over.

911 - I was at work. I heard it on the radio & thought it was just a radio show thing. Then, my co-worker asked if I'd heard it. We just stood there, like we were frozen in time, as the others hit their destinations. We heard the rumor that another plane was around Pennsylvania, which is where I live. We had no idea where, so we were scared. We went to one of the waiting rooms in the hospital & watched as the towers fell, none of us being able to utter anything but, "Oh my God!". I remember the only thing I wanted to do was go pick my daughter up at school & just have her with me & never leave her side!

Princess Diana's Death - Today's the anniversary. I was out with my friends. When I got home, I had a message from a friend on my answering machine, saying he was watching about Princess Diana's death. Since I hadn't heard yet, I had no idea what he was talking about. Then I turned on the TV & saw it. I woke up early the day of her funeral... was having some friends sleep over... & turned on the TV to watch the procession. My friends thought I was crazy. But I'm fascinated by world/life-changing events.

Hurricane Katrina - I was at work while the actual hurricane was hitting Biloxi, MS. But I was glued to the TV for days watching. My father was living in Biloxi at the time & we couldn't even find out if he was alright. I sat & cried everytime I watched it. And I asked my boss if I could go down with the Red Cross to help out, but since it was our busiest time of the year, he said, as much as he appreciates that I want to help out (& he knew I was from Biloxi), he couldn't let me off of work. I understood. We got my father moved up here a year after that. But his house, or what's left of it, is still down there.

I was just thinking about the Amish school murders in Lancaster. Since it was only about 20-30 miles from where I live, it was just so surreal. They're such a peaceful people. I felt as though their little "world" was so corrupted & violated that day! And the way they handled it, to me, was very commendable. The school's been torn down & a new one built.

Funny Galbally I thought you were going to say it was the first time someone called you MISTER. I remember the first time I was called MISTER, I thought hmm thats my dad not me.

The first one for me is when the two soldiers in Ireland were dragged out of their car at a funeral, beaten and then killed. I watched it on tv, felt sick to my stomach and then cried, lots.



Diana - I'd been to my best friend's hen night and had crashed at another friend's house, was in the bathroom when I heard the tv go on and lots of 'Oh my God!'s.



9/11 - had gone for physio for a bad back and was lying on the couch thingy with a tens machine attached to my back when the physiotherapist can in and told me that the first plane had hit. Me being a bit ignorant didn't actually know what the World Trade Centre was - soon found out when I saw the pictures. I have never felt so helpless in my life.



The Tsunami sort of happened without me knowing much about it initially - being boxing day we didn't have the tv on much or any newspapers but when we did hear it was another time when I wished I could do something to help, the only thing I could do was give money.
