Scottish and Irish,

However, there are different Irish accents, I like the accents from the North, (Donegal, Belfast accents are like music.) and I like the South West (Cork & Kerry) because if you want to laugh your ass off, have a joke told to you by a Corker. I hate the Dublin accent; it is so trashy, sounds like they talk through their nose.

I love the Scottish accent, I don’t know about different regions, but there is a Scottish woman in our town and here accent is hot, I also deal with a customer in Scotland and I could listen to her talk all day.

Is it too cliche to admit I love the French accent? Mostly I love any accent I can understand. Makes me mad to talk to reps on the phone and not understand them because their accent is too strong.

Does it never occur to you that you might have an accent they can't understand because it's too strong?

One of my pet hates is phoning companies, getting someone with a strong regional accent that seems to think everyone else talks funny, has trouble with scots surnames and place names and who having had it spelled out for them and given the correct pronunciation insist on using what they think is the correct pronunciation anyway. Mainly it's people in the south east of England that seem to think they talk properly and everyone else has a funny accent.

Yes, this has occured to me more than a few times. In fact when I have attempted to use my poco espanol I was honestly laughed at. So I do know the feeling. However I'm the sort who believes that when I pay for a service or whatever and this service has been implictly (or explicitly) stated as something I would receive in exchange for my hard earned dollars and I find out that I can't understand what someone is saying (could be due to my own lack of experience with a certain foreign accent, but this shouldn't be the issue because I'm the customer) then I think it is within my rights to either 1) complain to the company who hires people I cant understand to 'help' me with my problem-uh, transfer me to someone I can understand-:) or 2) stop paying for this type of nonhelp. I'm not one to point a finger without offering a solution so just in case you think I'm some heartless person, I think that any company that hires sales, tech, or whatever whereby accents impose some limitations on customer satisfaction, that these employers send their employees through some sort of accent modification program in order to efffectively communicate with those people around the world that may not be able understand easily enough. Truly customer, employees, employers would all benefit from this. My thinking anyway. I know, a little off the topic, but heck this thread wasn't going anywhere tonight anyway :p.

Adios,

Erin

Actually I know what you mean. I'm a bit of a hypocrite really. One of my pet hates is using a help centre and being unable to get the person to understand me because they are in foreign country where English isn't the first language. r carefully spelling addresses etc and they still get it wrong. like you I feel perfectly entitled to get annoyed about it.

Most surreal experience is being told by a German tourist that I didn't speak English properly.
