I have this tooth that has been nothing but trouble for two years now. I want it pulled from my head; it offends me. I went to the dentist today after waiting for over two months for my insurance information to get transferred to the proper location. The lab tech and I flirted with each other a little. She waited until I was biting down on the x-ray device to start it all. She said, “You have nice dimples when you smile. I told her that was wrinkles not dimples and she replied, “Well, we will call them dimples. I showed her the offending bicuspid, and she walked me to the exam room. When the dentist came in we exchanged pleasantries, and I told him I wanted it gone, He tried to convince me to get a root canal, a crown, and a bridge, I said, “Doc, no one can see that tooth but me, and I have to look way back in there to see it. If anyone is that deep in my mouth looking around and they don’t have a lab coat on they are going to see far more personal parts of me before the night is over.

He laughed and said he still thought I should save the tooth. I told him I was already saving everything I could at the moment. He told me they would still get me an estimate and let me know.

A little later this red head walks in, she looked at me and started trembling a bit; I have no clue why, I was smiling and not giving my, “I will eat your face for breakfast if you get any closer look. She showed me the two estimates.

Option A: Root canal, crown, and bridge. $3,500.00 dollars.

Pros: If I open my mouth wide enough to let in the sun and someone looks in they will see a straight line of teeth.

Cons: It will eventually break, fall out, or just be uncomfortable. It costs $3,500 dollars, and will take hours and hours.

Option B: Pull the bastard straight out of my head. $35.00

Pros: Nothing to break, nothing left to remember the offending tooth, I don’t have to worry about anything falling out. I won’t be able to smoke for a week; which is just the help I need.

Cons: If you pry my mouth open and stick your face down inside my throat you will see I am missing a tooth.



Think I will go with Option B.

Actually you will still be able to smoke.

Removal of the tooth will cause the other teeth to space out over time which may (usually does) result in the other teeth going squint, hence why i'm now wearing a brace at 41 years old.

We have a saying here - buy cheap, buy dear

Basic meaning is - if you take the cheap option now you just have to take the dear (expensive) one later.

Sorry this is not what you want to hear right now, just bear it in mind. Do you have some sort of dentist plan (pay it up scheme) in America?

I have insurance those are the prices after. I'll get the bridge done, but ain't doing it now. I'll be able to smoke, but not for a week; dry socket. The dentist said that the only problem he could see with the tooth being pulled was that the one above it will grow down a little more and become sensitive. It isn't even the money, although I have more important things to worry about now than one tooth. The tooth is gone pretty much anyway. There is nothing for them to grow to space out. The wisdom teeth are in and done growing. It us the second to last tooth on the back bottom right, even if some spacing does occur it will be back there.

It would seem doing the B option is the prudent thing to do. If after time, you find that missing tooth is positively bothersome for whatever reason, you can always have a single implant put in that open space. That most likely would cost less that half of current option A! Good Luck!

I was neurotic about going to the dentist and had to have gas every time, intil I found myself in real pain! Fear of the dentist was, as I soon found out, all in my mind. I just wanted the bloody things out. As he pulled out one particular tooth, I told him to leave it aside. Baffled, he asked why.

"That's the bastard one that's being keeping me awake all night - now I'm going to get my own back. I'm going to pour honey on it and watch it ache!":wah:

The tooth has not once caused me pain. I have good teeth, but this one has been a problem. Not in that it hurts, but in that it seriously offends me.

All of that was discussed, at length. The tooth does not have curved roots, and the dentist, an oral surgeon, said it will come out with no trauma to jaw bone or gum. The only thing that is a concern is dry socket, hence the no smoking. The inhaling causes the clot to be pulled away. I did not approach this as a "tie the string to the door knob and slam it shut" type of procedure. I went, we discussed options, and I chose the one I felt was best.

at least be a little glad you have insurance. I let ours go last year.after we had all of our theeth repaired that need it. I'm too cheep to pay the $25 a month. last month my husband had a filling fall out. needed x-rays and a round of antibiotics,$100 please,week later tooth cracked,needed pulled. more x-rays,tooth pulled,$140 please,thank you.

i could have paid for the insurance for the whole year and used it myself too.

I wouldn't worry about dry sockets and smoking too much. my hubby smoked with his extraction. And I have also.just don't drag on the cig too hard. I have to admit I am a die hard smoker,a bloody mouth wont stop me.:wah:

Root canals never work - the last one I had the Dentist left the drill bit in my jaw..

Pull it - you get a dry socket from any sucking motion - cig or straw...
