My parents live in a really nice gated community, and they have the amenities that go along with it, 2 lakes, 2 pools, 2 tennis courts etc. along with annual dues to go along with it and all kind of rules...can't have trash in your yard, no contstruction w/o permit from them and the county and NO big vehicles like 18 wheelers...etc....

I love where they live as far as the house location, but the neighborhood and HOA would stop me from ever moving there, well that and the schools there don't have the best reputation either.

I hate those things. You're paying money to have your busybody neighbors tell you what to do essentially. I'd move far away from that.

I just went and looked out my front window and guess what??:) I woulld be an insult to the garbage dump/!!!! too funny... I could never live in an area that told me what I can and cannot have in my yard...I imagine that having gates to protect you and an association to dictate is appealing to some but for me I enjoy my freedom..

Anyway Susie, I had a friend who was happily on the "violations committee" ofher neighborhood. She fined some guy for not painting a two foot section of fencing- on the *inside* of his back yard. I said "why would you care? No one's going to see it." She said "because he's not up to code!! We have rules!!" With her chest all puffed out like a banty hen. It was so ridiculous. We have places out here that don't allow clotheslines and even go to the extent of telling you what kind of light bulbs you have to put in your outdoor fixtures.

If it weren't for HOA's you would have some people painting their houses with stripes, pink flamingos or goats in the front yard or a nine foot statue of the Virgin Mary. HOA's will help keep property values from falling.

I live in a very nice neighborhood, where the property value (when the economy was good) continued on the rise. We don't have any striped houses or pink flamingos, I'm happy to report....I am afraid that my pigs in the front yard and the car on blocks might have kept a few people buying the house across the street....at least I have the chicken's in a pen nowadays......

My friend and I went out looking at model homes in one of those planned communities recently. The saleslady was falling all over herself about how wonderful their HOA was. I told her in no small words that wasn't a selling point for me, that I wouldn't be paying $80 a month to be told what to do by people no better than I was.

I t hink they're for people who are just afraid to deal with their neighbors on adult and polite terms. Rather than ask your neighbor to remove the beheaded garden gnome from his yard, the HOA can do it because they have "clout."

There are some draw backs to a HOA and then again there are several positive reasons to be with a HOA.

I live in a HOA community - I like it - keeps the community clean - the guidlines are in print before you sign. Knowing that, I understand it can be frustrating.

Angeleyes - you could wind you garden hose in one of those large pots made just for a hose? Our Satlelite dish is mounted in the back of our house - things can't be seen from the street - but yet I live on a Golf Course so whats the diff.??

And don't look in my garage - what a mess, we just keep the door closed etc..

Everything out front is nice & neat & clean

We have covernances in our area too, that say no satelite dishes, no commercial vehicles, no unsightly rubbish. They also look after the lovely green medows that we share with the neighbors, and come and treat the wood facing on the houses too.

I think it's a good idea..... I don't want to live surrounded by satelite dishes and white vans!

Yep glad none of those exist in my town. If your yard is overgrown and has junk the city will ask nicely for you to clean it up, then it's a fine.

"Buy a goat: that's all I EVER hear from everyone in my family....I have the WORST luck with lawn-mowers, I currently own 4, 3 of which are at my house....my brother borrowed the 4th one and won't give it back to me, says we will ruin it...ummmm It's mine darnitt and meanwhile the lawn is knee-high and I don't have the money to buy a new one.

I have worked.. landscaping in these gated communities with HOAs. It is a nightmare, Dealing with a bunch of pompas ass all psuedo political wannabees, who want to run everyone elses life. Please!

It looks like you might be living in one of the "Del Webb" communities.

I lump HOAs in the same group as imminent domain.

I used to work for a Builder who primarily worked in 2 of the local gated communities and they complained on a DAILY basis about the dumpster violation, or scattered trash or porta-potty...it was RIDICULOUS!! they would fine us if we didn't take care of it within 3 days.... I understand safety issues and the guys that were working for this builder were mindful of the trash...we never got fined, but I had the lovely job of radio-ing the guys and telling them they better go take care of it....I had nothing else to do....ha ha....NOT!!
