i think the most important part of that is the following:
"If you don't allow that [nieces], the thing just dies out. They really have to open this up. After a few years we are all going to be gone and who's going to join the legion," MacPhail said.
couldn't have been said better. exclusion is just dumb. eventually, the legion will just disappear.

"A stepdaughter can join, but a niece that is a blood relative cannot join," said Post 24 commander George MacPhail. "I don't think it's right."
You better believe that is not right! Christine, thank you for your service - and your perserverence with this. Keep up the good fight.
If you are too dismayed by these bozos, are there not other organizations you could join? I just don't know.

I work for a VFW. While you cannot join as a niece, they neverless had let you. It was their mistake yet you are the one paying for it. The ladies voted you in as president yet lack in support. How sad. I am glad to see you have the support of the regular membership. What these clubs need to realize is that the older veterans are dying off. It's hard to get younger members to join a club that is mostly made up of older veterans. Without social members, other relatives, etc. they will not have enough of a membership to continue. Hopefully they will open their eyes and allow other blood relatives to join. Hang in there, good luck, and let us know how it goes.
