This baffles me. I barely have enough to live on but have a licence and would LOVE to be able to buy and run a car but can't. Some on say Income Support or Job Seekers Allowance also have and use a car. How on earth do they afford to do that? Claiming extra money? If so please let on how so I can drive too.

Mobility allowance.

No tax, no insurance, cheap as chips! :-5

You would probably find that public transport is more expensive than running a small cheap car, problem tends to be maintenance of a car :-5

Do the sums. Guesstimates (£per annum) follow:

A car MOT'd for a year - £250.

Insurance third party only - £200

Road tax - £200

So, say £650 (call it........ £700) before you go anywhere.

Fuel - £800 (about £15/week, limited mileage!)

Sundries/contingency - £150

What does that add up to? £2,300 if I add up correctly - about £45 per week. Jigger about with the figures a bit if you will.



Answer: I don't know. Perhaps the "the black economy" is involved?

D-I-Y it, or throw it away and buy another if it goes wrong. Every car you throw away (scrap) will cost about £200, not a lot considering fuel bills, etc.

It does make you wonder Pinks but to be honest I was better off not working, I now go to work 20 hours a week, all to be £30 better off, but if I wasn't classed as disabled I would be -£10 a week, I get a premium for working with a disability.

Now I have to worry about childcare for 2 children for 12 weeks a year, not including inset days, so by the time I have paid a friend to watch them in the holidays I am down £20 a week :-5

This is a really big problem that can stop people from even *trying*. Well done for doing so anyway.

Great, thanks for the breakdown but no way I could afford even £45 with what I get for myself and two kids.

Have you applied for all assistance available, theres so much more available for single mothers.

Pink - the situation is frustrating, some single mothers keep having children to stay on assistance and those who need assistance don't qualify. Its a ugly cycle, and the cycle here in the US is out of control.

Hell - our wounded WAR HEROES don't get as much assistance as single mothers, and they would just appreciate their arm back - not a car..

The father has given me all of a tenner since Jade was born, really bought her a lot of things that. :-3 I am not saying I should be given more money to be able to buy and run a car, far from it. It annoys me that some are on benefits and able to have a car, especially a good one. My old neighbours were on benefits, had a car EACH and a van. No way the dad wasn't working, they had one daughter and I know she was a SAOM, he was on the fiddle. They did a runner from the bills too, bragged about never paying them.

I have a car as my friend gave me her old one, dunno about running it mind, have lost my keys!

Just because someone is in reciept of benefits it doesn't mean that they are diddling the social.

They could have mobility allowance which either allows them a blue badge or in some cases they are given a brand new car which they can keep for 3 years and the tax and MOT's and so on are paid for...My brother has had one since 1989.

Some people try to fool the medical assessments but not many get away with it.

I didn't mean with Mobility Allowance, obviously that makes a difference. I mean those on Jobseekers or Income Support. Not heard of being given a new car and everything paid for, that seems over the top, no offence. That would cost thousands surely.

I take it that you are talking about the motability scheme. It costs money, the car must be maintained in tip-top condition, and woe betide the person who returns a car that has any scratch, dent, or other issue.

Oh I have a licence, Karl has at last bought a car too. My sisters car was about £1000 a year for insurance.

It's a licence. The difference in tax is small compared to other costs, even (especially) if you run some old crate that does only 10 MPG. What car?

Peugeot 205. Only an old J reg, but works fine.

If she can afford it, that's alright ain't it lol. But the cost's have become really high... It's all these personal injury claims flying around lol
