When getting on to an Elevator (or Lift) and there is only "one" person already in it, instead of riding in complete awkward silence I try to strike up a conversation.
WHAT DO YOU DO?

I used to be really bad (worked in a 7 story building) and I would pick some
inane song to sing (A horse is a horse of course of course) and then later
in the day on a break walk around the building and see how many people
were singing it to themselves!! A real laugh riot!

I usually ask "what floor" and, after we know who's going where, I pretend to be absorbed in thought, so we don't have to talk.

Back in the early 70's I bought a very small device that I would put into my attache case and when I put pressure on the side of the case, you could hear the sound of raucous laughter emanating from the case. This was much fun on an elevator full of people.

I did a survey of my living room. "The crazy girl who now lives with me" most definately strikes up conversation. I've seen it. OOOoooooh nice brooch it's all sparkly. Her boyfriend said he doesn't talk, just stares straight in front of him. My daughter says she stares them down. Me, it depends on my mood somedays I talk and some days I just stare at the pretty lights on the buttons.

I like to have a conversation. But with an invisible person. I'll usually start an argument, like "What do you mean, you forgot the tickets??? How could you be so dumb???" Then pretend like I'm listening and then say "Oh, you did NOT tell me to grab them...." And so on. People either laugh or move as far as is possible in a 6 x 6 box. It's great entertainment.

I have a friend who was sexually assaulted in a lift, so its just a safety thing.

It is polite to acknowledge the prescence of another. "Good morning" or similar is fine, in addition to reciprocal questions about where to direct the lift. Other interaction according to the particular situation, such as the business of the area, the weather, directions, thanks for picking up a dropped item such as an umbrella - that sort of thing.

That's very unfortunate. They do have alarms in them. Was this recent or do you carry the fear with you? You could be assaulted anywhere, you know. But you still have to leave your house.

I just try not to dribble and scratch too much. I will however use the anonimity of the net to share a very embarrassing incident I once had in a lift. I had been out the previous evening to a mexican restaurant and had the whole Jalapeno, chillie, everything hot meal with a large number of corona beers (lime slice in bottle in true wine bar loitering fashion). My hotel room was on the 8th floor. By the time I entered the mepty lift various chemical reactions were taking place whitin my stomach that I understood would result in a pressure build up if not released, the lift and I made it to the 2nd floor before the horrendous reality struck. So obviously the lift stops at the 2nd floor and two extremely presentable young ladies enter what was now the chamber of death. I of course being the perfect gentelman exited the lift and left them to their fate. Sorry if it is too much detail.

It was about 10 years ago Koan, i suppose i am overly cautious sometimes, not just in a lift but in my car or out walking.
I live alone & have to admit i won't answer my door until i've 1st looked through the window to see who's there, i make sure my car doors are locked just in case someone tries to rob me at traffic lights, just some things i do to make me feel safe in the environment i'm in. :-5

Since my entry is in a motorized wheel chair, I concentrate on not running over anyone. However,.........if ya really smell THAT bad, perhaps I won't be all that careful

My BF gets a kick outta mauling me in an elevator when a single rider gets in. Makes them very nervous. Makes me embarassed and tempted to press the emerg button. :-3

The "emerg" button stops the lift, your motivation is what? :sneaky:

Sounds like your friend is very funny! But what if that nervous person may really think they are helping you by reporting the mauling to the nearest Police officer when exiting the elevator. :-2
