Which is better ?
Are the cable companies as lame as ever ?
Are the satellite tv companies surpassing cable tv in competetive pricing and service ?He left out the obvious alternative, not having a television at all. I find them impossible to ignore if they're on in a room. I much prefer to be in an environment which doesn't have one.
What is there about a television that makes it a must-have for you?
Have you ever spent a significant period without one? How did that compare?
What would persuade you to get rid of it for a trial period and see how you get on without?

Very good question Spot, I for one am not a big TV person. I used to be, but as you well know, ummm a computer addict now.....
When my youngest child was little and I was expecting the 2nd and 3rd children, my ex and I went through a period of time without cable TV, so we only watched video tapes. Which was okay, but when they got older, and I got busier, unfortunately we allowed cable tv back into the home. Looking back, I liked not having the TV, kids enjoy it though....
Weekends that the children aren't home, I could care less if the TV ever gets turned on. My oldest son will turn the "music channel" on the tv, which drives me batty!!:-5

I never watch tv...When I do it's usually the History Channel, Discovery Channel, or The National Geographic channel...I do watch American football every week on it, soccer matches, and other sports, but if it weren't for any of that I wouldn't own one myself...

As soon as I got a computer I lost interest in the tv. I might watch History Channel from time to time or a couple other occasional things but I just don't care about it otherwise. If it's on for someone else after a short while it just becomes blather and starts aggravating me.
That said, if I'm upset enough about something, I'll turn it on and curl up on the couch and stare at it but I'm not really watching it. It's just mindless.
I think it's been about four or five months since I've actually watched tv.

I love my T.V. and I will not apologize for it.
I watch 24, House, The Unit, Lost and I love movies. Besides if I didn't watch T.V. I would be on here making even more of an ass of myself than I do now.

I use the TV very little. Morning weather report, the maybe once in awhile repeat of an old TV show once a week or so. I could easily live without it, I really don't use it. I prefer it being quiet, rather than having it on for background noise. And to be honest, I think it has been over three years or more since I watched any show on the major networks here. There isn't one I would waste my time on.
Never seen Survivor, the Idol show, whatever. A good book is a lovely way to end an evening.

Interesting query, spot. I have always had a TV..and would not go without one in the house. But, actually, Rick is the bigger and most active television watcher in the house. I could do without for periods of time, he could not. Often, if he is watching something I have no interest in, I am either reading, puttering about the house, or on the computer.
If I am home alone for some reason for an extended period of time, I rarely have it on, except for maybe the news...or I have sometimes put on one of the digital music channels for background while I am doing other things.

i prefer to have a tv..i like law and order and csi...i also watch the weather channel alot....

but i prefer the tv off when i am the only one around...for most of my life i had no control of the tv...my ex watched what he wanted and the kids had it when he didnt...its no big deal to me either way....
i am enjoying this stage in my .life though when i can actually see what i like and what interests me on tv....for the first time i can remember i have a choice in deciding what i like and what i dont....

without my TV I could not watch DVD's, and Jr Minks could not watch cooking shows, and americas top model. I guess we require our TV, though I happily admit, It's nice not having to watch all sports, all day, now that there is no man in our lives hehehehehehehe

I prefer no tv. I'm happily without television right now and have no desire to refer to a screen as anything other than a monitor.

I like to have GMTV on in the bedroom in the mornings while I get ready and love my soaps. Nothing would persuade me to ever give up my TV. I don't watch half as much as I used to though.

I hardly ever watch TV and I could go without owning them if it wasn't for the kids using them.
I'd rather read or drink beer!

TV isn't a must-have for me, but I certainly enjoy it. I don't watch all the crap on there. I love my Law & Order: SVU and other crime shows. I love Animal Planet, Discovery, History channel, etc. I really enjoy movies as well.
Yes, I've spent a significant period without watching a TV. I'd rather have one, even if I didn't have any channels, I'd still have one to watch movies. It's just entertainment and learning to me, just like reading, and I don't mind accepting that I really like it.
Nothing would persuade me to get rid of it for a trial period. I already know I can get on just fine without it. But like my computer, I like it. So why get rid of it? Unless someone gave me money or a free trip somewhere.
TV isn't a bad thing just because some of the stuff on it is complete junk.

Subscribed to Satanta sports yesterday cos they pinched the US golf and some of the premier league footie from sky. Will scrap sky sports next week after the footie finally finishes.
Ah man...
I ordered Setanta broadband the day before the Fulham vs Liverpool game and found out that broadband isn't the same as Setanta tv...
Then I found out about SopCast...Awesome...
