i am disgusted that nbc news decided to show the pics of the virginia tech shooter.... they receieved the package first.. they could have set the standards and ran a message saying how they didnt want to give what the killer what he wanted... the killer wanted everybody to see him.. and NBC gave it to him... for what?

for ratings?

how do you think the family of the killer is feeling. how do you think the parents of those killed is feeling knowing the killer got what he wanted.

now the images are leaked all over the internet and the world.

good job NBC. now... fox, abc, cbs, every channel is gonna follow.

nbc you could have stopped this and set the standard. if nbc said they didnt want to show the killer because they didnt want to give the killer what he wanted, well then if abc showed the killer, their ratings would have suffered . sorry brian williams.... you have 0 class. you and nbc can shove it . now if i want to watch weather, i'll watch the weather channel.. if i want to watch sports, i'll watch ESPN. as far as keeping up with the world's news. i dont know how. but right now im disgusted with the media .

I agree totally which is why I believe that the actions of commercial media should be made more accountable and restrants put in place so that we get an informative service and not a bunch of ambulance chasing sensationalists.

I think as part of the grieving process and trying to understand how this happened the material does need to be public ally available at some point and in some manner, but I agree that splashing it all over the airways this soon after the event is insensitive and in poor taste..

Name 'em and shame 'em.

I for one want to see who did this deed. I don't care if he got what he wanted or not. He'll get his in the end. I also don't care what his family feels like seeing it. Maybe the victims' families need to see him so they can put a face on their hatred. Journalism has one obligation first and foremost and that is to report the news, tell what they know, not to decide what's going to make people happy and often not even to decide what's "politically sensitive" at the time.

Honestly every station as soon as discovering the persons(If you want to call him one) identity would show it and will show it...

I think if you boycott NBC you will have to do the same for any other network...

ok, 2 things guys,

#1 Imagine that beinig your child- not the best feeling- so be a little sensitive to that at least!

#2 I have talked to a couple of my friends who go to VT and they said they needed to see the video for closure. Hard to understand, but then again, so is the grieving process.

Freedom of speech is a b!t(H!

I call bull on the killer getting any news time!

The bugger was making a stand he wanted to die with a splash, why in hades should the media allow it.

Stop feeding the worlds head full of this kind of shock stuff. It breeds copycats.

Sick sick sick, this kind of thing should not be glorified in the news.

Families have lost children!!!!! this is not a media circus.

We're not being insensitive, we're being real. Everybody is somebody's child if you want to get right down to it. Including the POS who did this thing.

I've never understood "closure." It's such a psychobabble word. A talk show word. "Just do this thing and you'll get closure." Like that's going to fill the void. Not ragging on you, Sweet Tooth, it's just me being random about something that bugs me. ;)

Freedom of speech is the best thing going, IMO.

Understood, it's just hard for me to hear, ya I wanna see this guy, this killer, when that could easily have been someon you know's child! I guess my opinion on this has changed since I have had one!

I remember when I miscarried, I was a wreck. I guess closure is the feeling you get knowing that you can be at peace with the problem. My "closure" was knowing that it could have been worse- I could have carried this child full term for it to be a still born, or had a relationship with this child- that would have killed me. Closure i think equals comfort.

JMO!

I think it would have been better to turn all the material over to the investigators. After the investigation is concluded go ahead and release it in some manner. They have not released it all anyway just certain parts. So they are playing God anyhow about what is released and what is not. I imagine the most sensational material has all been released.

oh there are networks who are realizing that they dont want to air footage.. what nbc did was for footage... pure shock value. i would have more respect if brian wiliams read transcripts from teh video than never shown the guy.

the killer wanted to be on TV.. he thanked eric and dylan from columbine.

and yes... this will breed copycats.

remember john hinkley jr. who shot reagan? he wanted to be on tv.

personally i hoped they just never released his name.

how many people here know the names eric harris and dylan klebod. they are infamous. they got their message spread.

how many people here know what the unabombers name is?

he got his message/manifesto accomplished.

why cater to these jerks?

EDIT: and by the way, i haven't watched NBC news ever since. the today show was gonna show more of the video, but i watched the movie MADAGASCAR (sp?) instead this morning.

Ok, I keep hearing about this copycat theory. I don't buy it. If it's in the cards, in someone's makeup, it doesn't need a catalyst for it to happen. We can't be running around afraid of saying or doing things because we don't want to set off some crackpot- look at the power they'd hold over us then.

St Jerome speaks at one point ofthe man in the story who being unknown to everybody and finding that he could devise no good deed by which to gain renown, burned the temple of Diana: and when no one revealed the sacrilegious act, it is said that he himself went up and down proclaiming that he was the man who had applied the fire. The rulers of Ephesus were curious to know what made him do this thing, whereupon he replied that if he could not have fame for good deeds, all men should give him credit for bad ones.Aulus Gellius said of him "Unmentioned, like unmentionable, is he who is unworthy to be spoken of or thought of, who should never even be named, as once upon a time it was decreed by a general council of Asia that no one at any time should ever speak the name of the person who set fire to the temple of Diana at Ephesus".

Theopompus included his name in his Histories for some reason, so it's still known and used 2,363 years after the fire.

Steve Flaherty, superintendent of Virginia State Police, said he appreciated NBC's co-operation, but regretted the decision to broadcast the tapes.

The tragedy is that this monster just looks like a face in the crowd. We see that. How many others are there like him out in the world? Solitary...planning.........

The news networks are just doing what they are supposed to....report the news..good, bad and ugly.

As upsetting as it is to see this guy on tv, like many have said, they are doing their job, which is to inform the public. Yes, he wanted it on TV and this was his claim to fame, how sad is that? Life has its ups and downs, but even in my darkest hour, I didn't want to harm anyone, even when someone was threatning to kill me.

I was watching CNN here at work only for a few minutes a little while ago, and they were talking about this same subject, that people are complaining that NBC shouldn't have aired it already, too soon for the victims' families. I agree, and then there is always the "off" button of the TV, which I utilize a lot...

Ideas girl, it's about blasting the very ideas all over the place to these kinds of unstable characters... maybe not exactly copy cat methods persay but hey the guy had to get the ideas some place.

His tactics are so similar to the jerk who just did the same thing in eastern canada a few months back, posed like some kind of looney tunes with his weapons, like he was completely in love with them.

If this kind of stuff wasn't in our faces all the time I don't think half these people would find the glamour in it all.

Sorry glitter girl I ain't mad at you ok just mad at the entire situation.

the whole point i guess behind the thread is the concept of "martyr" ....

when zarquawi (sp?) was using insurgents to attack and blow up checkpoints and harm people (even behead his own kind) in iraq, thousands/millions viewed him as a hero. the media would broadcast him and show his picture.

i really don't see what diff. it woudl have made if they showed a picture of this cho guy or a picture of a cartoon drawing of a monster. they are both the same in my eyes.

i wouldnt be surprised if some troubled person looks to his video for inspiration and gives him credit like how cho gave credit to eric and dylan at columbine.

video images can move people to do things.

I agree with ya Parker, and this Cho character appears to ( i did read this someplace... yes?) have been mentally unbalanced so with the aid of video and media coverage this may make him more prone to act upon his desires in the name of martyrdom, violence etc.

Many of us have the ability to turn that desire off, but some people do not have that capability, and to flog their fragile minds with this stuff just pushes them further into doing these kinds of acts.

Of course this is merely my opinion, I have no scientific anything to back this up, just my observations of human nature.

Feed the fragile mind with fuel and it will act without thought to consequences.

It will happen eventually. Btu if you don't mention who he is and what he was on about, you'll be accused of a cover-up and conpiricy theories will abound.

one thing gets me about all of this ...The media is portraying him as Korean. he's been in America for 15 years. he's still , what 23? he's hardly Korean ........It's almost like a whitewash of "none of our nationals would do something or think something like this" Yet we know they have .

there seems to be a continuation of thought that any kid that does this is somehow whacko, so the normal people in society can hold their heads up high and think to themselves "they're not like us" but they are!

Obviously they're not. Normal people in society don't snap and kill other people and that's the difference between us and them.

they are brought up in the same culture and society as all of you, and you have to take responsibility for them.

Or maybe that's the problem, you're so busy quibbling over cencorship and gun rights etc. that you yourselves have turned it into a circus .....................

Why do you seem to have such a disdain for our freedoms and our reverence for them, Magenta? You're blaming America yet again. How about blaming the killer for being half a level off plumb? With freedom comes personal responsibility. He did what he did of his own volition. It wasn't America that forced his hand.

It seems anything but the truth is better than facing this epidemic of young adults going off their nuts.

What is your idea of the truth then?

You are going to see more of this and you darn well know it.

Sure we will because it's the human condition.

I think anyone with an ounce of compassion gives a flying rats ass about the families of the dead and their feelings.

I also think that making a profit out of the events should not be the ultimate arbiter of acceptability.

Given the evidence that the killer was following the events at Collumbine, who will take responsibility for the next copycat killer wanting notoriety?
