Good topic. I'm really curious to see what others say about this. I know where Tombstone stands on this one.
Let's see: I believe in God. I believe that we (humans) were made in "his" own image.
Now here comes the hard part: Where did God come from? Always existed? Or, is he a supernatural force from somewhere else in the Universe. Are we the seed of another "race" planted long ago?

god is far too complex a concept to be verbalized. the nature of god is the ultimate inexplicability of god.
in my opinion, of course.

I believe in a Higher Power. Higher matter/energy. No I don't go in for any religions which are human made. Religions are all about Power, male power over women, places and things, they are also political and money making rackets. ISLAM & Roman Catholism are two of a kind in this area. POWER & POLITICS with Terror thrown in.

There are now more Religions in Ireland. The Roman Catholic Church has the rest of you believe that there are 93% of the popl, who regular attend holy mass, its about 47% who attend today. The protestant church was 4% but in recent years many RC's have moved into the Pro Testant Church because of the child abuse scandals in RC and RC state run schools and institutions. High Court and State run tribunal claims mounting to 600 million.

Of course not all Roman Catholic religious are child abusers. I have met many good priests, nuns and christian brothers in Ireland who do a lot of good in the community.
Muslims are now mounting to 37.000 members in Ireland and growing.
That leaves other religions i.e. Mormans,Hindo's and other small groups.

I always notice the Christian & Muslin use the HE - in HIS own image. The Male God. Why not a female. Though the catholic church hold Mary is the Queen of Heaven, and at the same time puts women down as 2nd class citizens like the Muslims.

Very few people in the western world really believe in God. Take a good look at their nations and tell the unbliever all about the God of love and peace while they Hate their neighbours and prepare for War.
The DoomsDay Clock stands at 5 minutes to Midnight. Then its the Final Countdown. Unless those days be shortened,no flesh will be saved alive, now where did I read that?

Personally I'm undecided but one thing I am sure of is that anyone who says they know the word of god and tell me how to live my life probably doesn't and should be avoided. Fundamentalists of all kinds should be put together on a tiny island where they can fight amongst themselves and leave the rest of us that want to live in peace alone.

It all comes back to one thing. Do you believe yes or no. Its faith pure and simple. Not really something that lends itself to logical debate
When a you talk to a true believer christian, muslim, take your pick you cannot shake their faith. On the other hand those who are compelled to force others to believe a they do I would argue are not true believers but scared of those who make them question what they believe. If you disagree with someone it's often easier to thump them than talk about it.
When Jesus sent out his disciples he didn't say burn anyone that disagrees but that's what christians did and some would do today given half a chance. The same with muslim fundamentalists my way or hell has no part in either christianity or islam.
I find both sides incomprehensible and am thankful I live in a secular country where people worship as they please. Although there are those who want to change that guess who?

Most Christians that I know believe that scripture reveals the nature of God but they don't take it literally.
It is a pity so many fundamentalist christians do. Not so much that they believe it but that given half a chance they would impose their views on everybody. That type of chriatian I don't think is a christian, they do seem to have an inordinate amount of influence in US politics.
I have seen it suggested that the Uk religious wars were so destructive that ever since we have an inbuilt aversion to any kind of extreme religious belief. We shipped our puritans to america where they seem to still cause trouble.

What I find depressing is that so many people need someone to tell them what to think and what to believe. If you don't agree it's because you don't understand, if you don't conform you are at fault and must find the error of your ways. forget christian teaching about tolerance. An eye for an eye is not christian. Carrying our pre-emptive strikes on perceived enemies is not a christian act.
I always thought that the point about jesus was to show a new way for mankind. with tolerance and understanding for all. The whole point about the protestant reformation was to allow people to read the bible for themselves and not just have to listen to corrupt self seeking priests, yet the bulk of the religious right seem to be protestant denominations
Looking at what I have posted in reality my knowledge of US fundamantalism is gleaned from the TV and occasional amazed watching of the god channel (it's all send me money and I will show you the way to salvation with this tape, book, whatever) so I may have a totally wrong view of things. We have the same strains that the US does but the religious right are on the whole viewed as a bunch of nutters best ignored and received with hostility when they try and interfere in our lives.
In the UK we have had the US evangelical churches preaching their message of abstinence from sex in place of sex education only to be met by deafening indifference. The Catholic church and the more extreme protestant also want to ban sex education. The overwhelming reaction is keep your religon but don't try and shove your opinion down our throats. Its the same in France they have a secular society and want to keep it that way
In Scotland we have a slightly different attitude to education in that the whole point is to educate people so they can think for themselves right back to the early days of John Knox, read the bible yes but so that you can find out for yourself and not follow blindly what you are told. It was seen as a way to combat catholicism. The only compulsory subject is religious education but we still have a largely secular society despite the demented sectarian nutters we have as well.
Our politicians are ambivalent, the tories don't like social history being taught and prefer it to be about the important dates not why things happened.
http://www.channel4.com/history/microsi ... /benn.html
The civil war doesn't really get taught, it's more parliament killed the king, cromwell was a nasty purita,n the king came back and we all live happily ever after. Yet what happened influenced not only us but the US as well, the same debates roll on and on.
I ramble a bit but do you believe in god is a question people have been killing over for years. Therein lies the roots of our democracy. If all men are equal in the eyes of god then why aren't we equal on Earth? Arguing about who's version is right is a power game played by priests. Come to me and i will bless you and you will go to heaven. By the way you just need to kill these people here because they are unbelievers.

The only answer I can give to this is, I was a long long time in the gutter. I did not get to where I am today on my own. And I'm certainly no Religious fad. I don't attend churches or meeting chapels ect. But today, I can call myself a Christian today.(I'm beginning to read the bible )thanks to the encourement from some members here for the very first time in my whole life. I read bits of it before, but it didn't mean anything to me.
I came to believe.

many years ago, i read something - don't remember where, might have even been a school textbook - but some bright fellow had calculated how many molecules of air a typical person breaths in in their lifetime. and then calculated how many molecules of air there are in the atmosphere. and the number this fellow came up with was the number of molecules each person breaths in with every breath, that Leonardo daVinci breathed at one time. and the number he came up with was 14,000 molecules of air. every single breath.
now, obviously, that was a theoretical calculation. and there are a million and one variables that affect it, things like molecules of air absorbed by trees, and then locked into carbon, which are no longer part of the free atmosphere. but even if we discount it a hundred times - no, a thousand times - no, even ten thousand times - it means that with every single breath you take, you breath 14 molecules of air that Leonardo breathed.
my point?
we are all connected. no matter how isolated one may feel at times, no matter how 'separate' from the world, or from other people one may seem, we are not separate. we are all part of one thing, this existence. we are connected to the past, and in a moment from now, the future.
God? i feel i'm a part of God, because God is everything. and i am connected to everything. *everything*.
why does the sun exist? what filled the space that the "big bang" filled with space before it banged its bang?
the molecules in my body were at one time part of the sun, billions of years ago. that's incontrovertible. part of me is from the sun.
some would counter that i'm using God as simply an explanation for nature. okay.
'explain' nature. you can't 'explain' it without science. but science can't explain *why* there is nature. nor, for that matter, can science explain why -according to the laws of science - the laws of science do not exist. twist your neurons around that for a bit. i gotta go pour me a cold root beer.

I do believe in God. That He manifested Himself in three persons...the father, the son and the holy spirit. I beleive in His own explanation of himself..the alpha and the omega. I believe He can be known and speaks to man now through the person of Jesus christ in the scriptures.

quote clearly, God did not imbue me with a very good sense of math.
i should have stopped at 'a thousand times'.
