Virgin Media, which has around 3.3 million cable customers, said it had tried to get BSkyB to agree to arbitration with the help of an "independent expert" on Wednesday, but even with a personal call to BSkyB Chief Executive James Murdoch that afternoon, the company was unsuccessful.

"We're sorry that Sky have pulled their basic channels from our service," said majority shareholder Richard Branson in a statement.

Talks broke down last week after Virgin Media accused BSkyB of "bullying" and "arrogance," and said it had put too high a price tag on its core roster of popular channels, which feature the likes of Lost, 24 and new episodes of The Simpsons. "So thanks to Sky, some of their non-premium channels, like Sky One and Sky News, have disappeared from our service," Virgin Media added.

Sky's a modern-day system whereby you pay the devil and get hot pitches every ten minutes.

From "The Grauniad unlimitd":

Virgin Media customers unhappy at losing 24, Lost and The Simpsons will be allowed to cancel their contracts without penalty payments.

The cable company announced today that customers who receive just the TV service will be given a once-only opportunity to cancel their deals before the end of March.

Normally, Virgin Media customers who sign up with a one-year contract would be expected to pay out the rest of the deal if they wanted to cancel the service.

A Virgin Media spokeswoman stressed that the deal would only be open to TV customers, and not broadband or phone customers or viewers with large amounts in arrears.
