http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolphin_drive_hunting

Though drive hunts happen on various places around the world, it is mainly the Japanese drive hunts that receive considerable international criticism. The hunts are considered very brutal by many, especially because dolphins are popular in human culture and known to be highly intelligent mammals. Not all of the Japanese fishermen are convinced of this and do not believe dolphins deserve to be treated any different from fish. Since the hunt dates back several centuries, it has become a tradition and thus the criticism is perceived by some as an attack on their culture.

Norway and Japan have long hunting and whaling traditions. I totally agree that this is sick and wrong but you have to understand that in their culture it is an acceptable tradition! Every country has to make their own laws and although we can create embargoes on Japanese imports we're limited in how we deal with them. Imagine if they came to us and said "You should be like us. Only one child per family. All extra children should be slaughtered!" We'd be shocked, horrified, distraught, sickened. We cannot take over another country without becoming dictators ourselves. We have to constantly compromise for the sake of world peace.

All we can do Jimbo, is write letters of protest to our MP's, to Tony Blair, to the newspapers. We can join Greenpeace and help fund their fight to save the planet. If everyone did these things and did them continuously, then yes, our politicians would have to take more of a stand. As it is, pictures get shown, people complain, the Japanese get their knuckles slightly rapped and then everything carries on as before. Just like drivers on their mobile phones, in a way. Driving and talking on a mobile became illegal in this country about 5 years ago. Did it stop people? No. So today a new law was introduced which says that if they're caught they'll get a fine and 3 points on their licence. Do you think this will stop them? No. They'll just be more sneaky about it! Wear tiny headsets or shrink down behind the wheel. They still won't be concentrating on the road. They'll still kill people. People are too selfish. Countries are too selfish. Life sucks. :(

A UK scientist says some hunted whales live for more than an hour after being harpooned. :-1

I agree Wendy. I could not watch this either. I have seen something similar before on TV and felt ill. The poor things were herded into shallow water and trapped by nets. Some were carved up alive to be used for meat. Some of the others were spared and shipped to zoos to perform tricks. However this was after they had witnessed their family’s murder.

How the Japanese government can allow this is beyond me. There is no excuse. If anyone knows of a reputable charity that can campaign to stop this, I would love to know.

Perhaps one reason that they get away with it for so long, is because it is so horrific and decent people can’t cope so ignore it. So thanks to Carl44 for posting – it is horrible but we must not bury our head in the sand.

Thanks

Sable

It's better than being a domestic cow though, that's for sure.
