Wooo !! just heard it on the local news. He is gone and no one has been named yet. They wouldn't have done this without already have a good idea who is going to replace him. :yh_questn They just renewed his contract for a year, then bammm he is fired today.

Sounds to me like he's retiring...

I wouldn't know anyone who wouldn't want that job...

Especially after they just went 14-2...I have a feeling there's alot more to the story.

The AFC is by far more competitive than the NFC...

Look at the Colts, and Tony Dungy's comparatively bad record in the playoffs stemming from his tenure in Tampa Bay and for his first few years in Indianapolis, yet just won the Superbowl.

Marty lead that team to 14-2 to set their franchise record for games won in a season I do believe...Chargers wanted him back, Marty wanted more money, or like I said before, he may be retiring.

I'm not sure what is going on but it doesn't seem good at this point. Every damn coach we had is now working for other teams. We don't have a head coach, offensive coach, defensive coach we have nothing, and now the head coach get the ax.

They must have a plan in order to do this now. I hope they know what they are doing.. Damn I hate this ...:-5

I'm waiting for the news at 10 to get the scoop..

AJ and Marty have been on bad terms for 2 years that I know of.

I think with all of the coaches leaving the owner wanted to bring someone younger in so not to leave Marty Shottenheimer(Whom has to be looking ahead to retirement) to begin the whole headache of bringing in the right coaches for his squad...More so, so that when he does retire they don't have to deal with firing all of his coaches he had working with him for when the new coach chooses who he wishes to coach for him. He has been in the league since '84 I believe.

I know a "Lame Duck" but all the coached didn't leave because of Marty, they left because they are all that good and other teams offered them better jobs. :-5

Here we go all new coaches I hope the players can rise above it and play as they did this year. I hate going through the years of breaking in a new Coach, in this case all new coaches.. :-3 Yikes this could go either way.

That's true, and he deserves credit for it. He also had great teams with the Browns and the Chiefs, and often couldn't advance past the first round of the playoffs.

He's won 200 games. Schottenheimer completely turned around the Chargers franchise. And I would argue this past season, when San Diego went 14-2, Marty was brilliant. He tabled his conservative "Marty Ball" approach and allowed Philip Rivers to win games and be the perfect compliment to LaDainian Tomlinson, who was winning games by himself.

Yes, the Chargers suffered a difficult playoff loss to the Patriots. But you cannot fire a coach for that and simultaneously eradicate all the good that was done this past season and throughout Schottenheimer's tenure in San Diego.

Interesting article from the San Diego paper three days before they lost to the Patriots. Sounds like the natives were already restless before the game. Tag line from the article:

Only four coaches have won more regular-season NFL games than Schottenheimer's 200. Only two have been to the playoffs more often than his 13 appearances.

Conversely, no coach has won more games yet never been to a Super Bowl.

I have been speechless till today when I heard the news as to who Spanos had selected as the new coach of the Chargers I went Catatonic. Unable to even say his name till today....:-1

NORV TURNER.. please what a stupid move. My only hope is the guys are good enough to carry on and be just as good no matter who is coaching..

Well,..I think Norvs tenure at Oakland shouldn't prove to be an assessment of his ability to coach...

Al Davis has been the one holding that team back and Norv shouldn't get any of the blame for that...If a coach isn't allowed to get the players he wants, then he isn't going to be successful...

I think Norvs coaching ability will be exposed with San Diego, and even then it may not for a while, because San Diego is a good team...I'm thinking Mariucci all over again, but only time will tell who is the better coach.
