Venus

Is Peter O'Toole a classic actor in the the old style of leading men? Certainly! Do we all remember his great performances in such films as "Becket" and "Lawrence of Arabia?"
YUP! That's why I went to see "Venus," thinking it might be the crown of his career.
Peter O'Toole is the star of this film and although I enjoyed parts of it, I don't think I'd recommend it to most people.
It's like watching the death of an endangered animal. It's sad and depressing and uncomfortable.
I think it's supposed to be about the last love of a man's life...but, instead, it winds up making us cringe, as Peter O'Toole's character begs for the privilege of licking a young girl's shoulder.
He's a fine actor and there are some very funny parts....but....I'm really sorry to say that I think he's made a horrible choice here.
Professional critics and award-givers may disagree, of course. We'll see.
Meanwhile...consider seeing something else and possibly renting this next year.
Possibly.
