Oh, I've tried vegemite...twice, as I recall.

There are so many wonderful things about Australia and the wonderful folks who live there....

Vegemite ain't one of 'em!

What's actually IN vegemite anyway?

Can the taste be compared to anything we have in the States?

Well, taste is so subjective....but it has a sour, dirty socks-ish taste. And it's really stinky, too.

A couple of people have listed the ingredients already in this thread....read backwards.

Sounds a bit like Bovril, which is in fact nice, on buttered bread, or as a drink.

I used to put it in the kids vegies & mash them all .

We were bought up on it,like most kids in Stralia;)

Not too thick, though - that's probably the mistake that people make. It should

generally be spread on very thinly!

That's because Bovril has got beef in it! Vegemite hasn't, neither has Marmite.

I have just had some bread and Bovril. I will get the jar....

....beef stock 42%, yeast extract 24%, salt, colour E150c, waxy maize starch, dehydrated beef 1.3%, small amounts of othe stuff.

'Sok. Vegemite is very like Marmite, just lighter brown, and rather less strongly-

flavoured. I've never had "Promite", though - what's that like? Similar I suppose.

WHOA! You mean it's possible to become an "HONORARY" Aussie? Where's the line begin, please? I could even GAG down Vegemite once....if it were a requirement! :( Once.
