They had a TV program about it a while back - the big debate centred about one mother who still breast fed her 7 year old.

This "7-year-old still breast feeding" raised a HUGE flapdoodle, as I recall. I once saw a child running quite skillfully up to his mother and demanding "TITTY, Mama, TITTY" in the zoo. I think if they're speaking articulately and running, not toddling, they're probably old enough to be weaned.

TEETH are another indicator. :wah:

I think any mother over 55 who's still doing it should go back and re-read the manual.

I'd guess that the teeth made it fairly obvious, yes :wah:

If the child still wants it then why not. But I think they should be weaned off before they start school.



Personally I wasn't able to do though I wanted to and I sometimes wonder if that is one of the reasons she has both asthma and excema.

I was not able to breast feed past 6 weeks. My daughter started losing weight and my pediatrician told me there are women who cannot breat feed past colostrum. Did I feel less than adaquate because I could not breast feed my child......yes I did. It was just another thing about my body. I had to put my daughter on soy and on rice cereal and then to fruit within 3 months and then vegies at 6 months and that girl was eating baby meat at 9 months. The doc said she was HUNGRY.......feed her!!!! Is she overweight today.....NO.

I think once they have teeth and can chew its time to stop. It is a wonderful thing to do if you can, If you can't its not a big deal.

There are benefits from mother milk in the first month of the birth and for a bit there after. But I would think that once they can have solid food they have gained all the benefits by then.

i breast fed all four of mine untill they were about fifteen months....

I regret not feeding my two for longer although with my son it was difficult, he was premature and in SCBU I extracted milk every four hours night and day for five weeks until my milk actually just tried up through no stimulus (baby not with me) and shear exhasustion on my part.

My daughter had even less, normal delivery but she wouldn't latch on properly, with pressure from the ex I left hospital too soon and feeding was not established so inevitably she ended up on the bottle fairly quickly.

I breast feed three of mine .
