The Rain

Most kids like the rain. Maybe it's the odd fact that water is falling from the sky, maybe it's the hypnotic ripples that emulate from the tiny drops as they merge with the puddles on the ground, or maybe it's just the anticipation of the first jump as a rubber boot stomps its way through the miniature lakes. For me it was the smell of wet pavement.

When the rain stopped and the road was empty I would emerge from my house, close my eyes and breathe in the tangy scent of the wet tar mingling with the air. It was the smell of newness. Of a world washed clean. While the other kids ran from puddle to puddle splashing wildly, I would slip my boots off and sit on the curb. With my bare toes tapping against the edges of a small pond I'd listen to their laughter and breathe in the smell of the wet pavement.

Thank you.

I find prose is a form of poetry without the boundaries. I still love poetry too, though.
