I was just wondering if anyone knows the general statistics of the number of students who actually get degrees to those who don't.

Do you think that most people in the general population are not college educated? I am meaning the population of the U.S.

As I am getting closer to finishing school I think about how hard it is to stay in school, financially. And how many times I could have dropped out. It seems that most people who I know are not college educated.

Is there a statistic that I can refer to?

Is anyone here educated? AA or BS or Phd or a Doctorate? If so, what was your degree or line of study in?

I have a BSW..bachelors in Social Work.

When I started college right out of high school, I left after a year. Took me almost 10 years to go back and finish.

I do not know anything about statistics...but I am sure alot has to do with finances and motivation to finish,

According to the US Census bureau, 28% of people in the US have at least a bachelors degree. This is significantly lower than I thought it would be.

As a current college student myself, I can certainly sympathize. But the same site where I got the statistic cited above indicates that a bachelors degree (anyone know the derivation of that term?) doubles one's earnings. I kind of like that number, yanno?

Besides, after two years of slogging through this, up till all hours doing homework (because I'm a single parent as well, and the only time I have to do homework is after the kidlet goes to bed) and all the time, money, and stress I have invested in this, I'm just too damn stubborn to give up now.

i attended s.f. state from 62-69, lived a few blocks up the hill (twin peaks) from the haight, had a ball playing with geography and topography. discovering new places and finding my way through the wegetation in the walleys (it took me one semester just figuring out the norweigian professor pronounciations). took a job (tour bus and limo driver in the city) six units short of BS (but developed plenty of that driving tours): no regrets, lots of great memories (some a little hazy, and perhaps embellished upon, but keeps my smile lines healthy and active), priceless, and a long strange trip it's been. keep on truc'n exploring new geography, the curves, mountainous topography, and the wegetation in the walleys. everyone should have the thrill of doing it, gooooooooo to college.

I have a BS and an MA but I'm not educated...:p

thanks to everyone who answered this thread. It's been really difficult for me. I don't get student loans, but did at one time.

I like the post about making more more money with a bachelor's degree. I am still working on my AA. And that has been an uphill climb. But it seems that the longer I stay in school, the better I feel about it. And the more determined I get.

Been in school since 1997 (long story about why it's been so long), but I'm finally graduating in May of next Spring with a BS in Psych. Next on the list is a Master's either in social work (preferred by my agency) or psych (my fave), which would mean furthering my educ. to a Ph.D. or Psy.D for private practice, but my current level of certification lets me work in my chosen field - addictive disorders. The degree will simply allow me to move up those levels. I love school, actually, and am looking forward to grad school, provided I can get into one here, cause we're limited in options.

I love school too. Really. But not one person can understand. It's like people think that one is supposed to hate school. And I don't. Seriously, I wish I could stay in school for at least long enough to get a BS in something. I love it.:guitarist

No worries Saffron, I understand that for sure. Like I said, I've been in school almost 10 years, and have enough hours to prolly have a double BS, but it's because I love a variety of classes

I wish I could back to school now and study something I really love like history. When I was in school it was all about filling a square not about the learning.

Ahhh, well that's certainly a consideration cause it's expensive as hell. When I graduate I'll be in debt about $30,000!

went to ccri was taking phsychology did not finish have one more year. probably will go back. i liked going to school. was really hard working 55 hours a week and going to college, but i did it for 3 years. good luck.

By the way, I have a post-graduate qualification from the University of St. Andrews and I am still an eejit.

I quit going to college just 3 hours shy of having all my general study requirements. I didn't want to do the 45 mile one way commute by myself and I still had no idea what I wanted to get a degree in. I'm kicking myself in the arse now for not finishing.

Yes, I first started out studying fashion design. But after my first graphic design course I enrolled in I changed my degree. Now it's graphic design. And that's an art major. So I also loved the art classes. I think I've been in school for about 7 years. But not the same school. I transferred to a community college that has a very very good art department. I have about 80 units now. I went over the amount I am supposed to have for a 2 year college. So I had to go do some paperwork in the office to allow myself to finish. Now, after this semester is over, I will have only 6 more courses that are requirements. And only 1 of them is a general ed course. And I started college in 1998.

I should have been in college while I was in my 20's by I was painfully shy then. So I waited till after I got divorced.

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing. I went to Northeastern University in Boston, MA and graduated with a 3.69 GPA.

I really liked school a lot -- in college, you know exactly what is expected of you and exactly when it is expected. You just have to figure out how to get there

But I'm good at adding structure to an unstructured environment. :-6

i have an associate in science/nursing but i am very good at business bookkeeping and the like.....should have gotten a degree there.......

I go online. The only time I set foot on a campus is if I want to test out of a class or talk face-to-face with an advisor. I couldn't go if it wasn't here at home; being a single parent, the logistics of finding childcare for the evenings would be prohibitive.

I've gotten really close...I should be done in about a year from now. It sounds like forever, but I've been doing it for two years, and as I said before, I'm too close (and too stubborn) to quit now.
