What event or events in history have had the most emotional impact upon you?

For me, it would be watching the Challenger explode on TV (I still remember EXACTLY how I felt at that moment) and 911. I guess I never had felt attacked in my "own home" before until then.

Yeah 911...

I had actually seen the second plane hit the World trade center live on television, and then afterward I remember just having an eerie feeling. Not to mention the months afterward.

I saw the second plane as well. and everything else that followed. I just knew that the world had changed in an instant. I think that it was a true watershed in the battle against terror. One which I hope we can win someday.

I was standing in my front yard watching the shuttle take off when it exploded and divided. To me that was the risk they took, they knew it was possible.

Unlike 9/11. That hurt deeply.

Wow. I can only imagine the bigger impact of seeing it in person. :(

I was 19 when that happened and still pretty naive about stuff. It never occurred to me that anything could or would go wrong. I remember how sick I felt seeing that ghastly, ugly, horrible, snaky ribbon of smoke in the sky. Then the camera panned to the crowd watching and I could see their expressions as the people understood what had happened.

I think that was the first time I ever felt like I was a part in something bigger than myself or my personal little world.

K and Woppy...I didn't see the second plane hit. But I can appreciate the eerieness of you both seeing it. :(

I was sleeping and my mom woke me up and said "It looks like we've been attacked!" My first thought was "Not us!" Hmph. I'm not sure if that's American "superiority" talking or just naivete.

911. Yes. Transfixed.

Watching the last of the soldiers come home from Viet Nam. When those last men stepped off that plane..... I remember my friend and I were lying on the floor in front of the TV and she was crying. I didn't cry, but I'll never forget feeling that 'Finally they were all home'.

When Bob Geldof brought to the world's attention the plight of the ppl in Africa. The walking skeletons, the dead and dying babies....

The Katrina victims. The children and the elderly mostly. I cried for days.

The Tsunami victims. Again... my tears could fill a pool.

Oh Hammy, I have to include Diana too!! :(

So many of us Americans are fascinated by the Royal Family and if we had a princess, Diana would be the kind we'd have. ;) So human, so real, kind, compassionate, passionate in her beliefs, not arrogant or pompous. I watched her wedding which made watching her funeral that much worse. I actually cried for someone I didn't even know. But that's the thing...the world felt like it did know her. I hope that's some kind of an honor in her eyes.

Yeah. Princess Diana. :-1

I'm sorry, Wolverine! Rain mentioned the soldiers returning home from Vietnam, and I was saying that I would have liked to have been old enough to remember and appreciate that. :)

Patsy, I'm sorry about your husband and your nephew. :(

My closest friend was working at a summer camp in Penna. On her way back home to LA, just two weeks before 911, she and some friends got a hotel in NY. Can't remember the name now but it was so close to the trade center that it caught fire. If not for the grace of those two weeks, my friend might have been gone. :(
