Urinals Shaped Like Women's Mouths Canned

VIENNA, Austria -- The " Opera Toilet" is getting canned.

An Austrian businessman is bowing to public pressure and promises to get rid of urinals shaped like a woman's mouth. The controversial public convenience is located near Vienna's national opera.

The urinals feature lipsticked lips, a set of teeth and a bright red tongue. A spokeswoman for the Vienna Department of Women's Affairs told The Associated Press that the urinals are tasteless and offensive.

Owner Neuhold Gerhard said his public restroom has been open for three years. He said he found it odd the urinals only became an issue during Austria's recent national election campaign.

Gerhard promised the urinals will be replaced in the next couple of weeks.

If it were a man's mouth or neutral gender mouth, that would be bad enough. But considering in our modern age that women are still considered substandard, the act of peeing into a facsimile of a woman's mouth is that much more abhorrent. I mean, who came up with this toilet?? Did they actually think it was amusing?! What's next, phallic liquid soap dispensers in the women's john?! (sorry men)

Oh no prob, Beagle! I'm not even sure if it was here or at care2.com that I saw the photos. But the toilets were really kinda creepy looking, I thought.

They do look very creepy.

For those guys who "accidentally" touch those lips, I certainly hope that that lipstick is smudge-proof ! :wah:

Can I ask - if the men's toilet is called a John, why isn't the women's toilet called a Jane???

You know, I'm not the most steady on my feet kind of girl and I could see a serious accident waiting to happen with that floor toilet. :-3





I was reading about ancient Roman times and how they had public toilets (VERY public, like sit next to each other and talk!) and according to the historian, each toilet had its own stick with sponge on it and said nasty sponge would be used by many.



God, with sanitation like that, it's amazing any of us are even here today.

If you stop and think about it squatting is more sanitary than sitting. Most of the restrooms I have been in around Eurasia have been very clean as they are staffed bt attendants. The one in Minsk has full service with showers for travelers and even laundry services.



#1 or #2 400br ( Belorussian ruble = $.20) a shower will run you an additional 800 br and laundry is about 1500 br a kilo and takes about an hour for a wash.



It is staffed by at least 3 people and it is as close to spotless as you can expect for the traffic it sees.



The worst I have seen had to have been Kurski Vokzal (train station) in Moscow. Absolutely disgusting, nauseating with hundreds of people using it an hour. They needed to burn it out. It was rank, over used with one attendant who just took money. The one in Warsaw Poland was in the same league only older.



I remember the one in Smolensk was so clean you could eat off the floor. Minsk is utilitarian, Smolensk's had lilacs with scented candles on holders on the walls and a big mural on one wall of a feild with trees. It was all white and lite green inside and poster of a Babushka with a switch reminding you to wash your hands by the exit.



In Russia its not unusual to have some Babushka cleaning the urinal next to you while you're whizzing either.



Balance is not a problem because you usually have something to grab onto.




:wah: That's what the US needs!! Actually Scrat, that was pretty interesting to know, as I have no world travel experience and I tend to not realize how basic things like bathroom services are in other parts.
