Inside the Mac Revolution

In 1978, a young Andy Hertzfeld spent every penny to his name on an Apple II. Hertzfeld was nervous about the purchase at the time, but it turned out to be the best investment he ever made.
Hertzfeld went on to join Apple Computer as an engineer, and eventually became a key member of the Macintosh development team -- a motley crew of pirate programmers whose maverick project has defined personal computing.
Now Hertzfeld has turned his tales of how the Mac was made into a gorgeously illustrated and highly readable coffee table book, Revolution in the Valley: The Insanely Great Story of How the Mac Was Made, published by O'Reilly.
Running 320 full-color pages, the book is a collection of insider anecdotes, right from the horse's mouth.
Well, horses' mouths. The book includes contributions from several other members of the Mac team. The majority of the book has already been aired on Hertzfeld's Folklore.org website and vetted by those involved -- a somewhat elaborate process Hertzfeld designed to achieve consensus.
After seeing the site, tech publisher Tim O'Reilly suggested turning it into a book. Having written the stories, Hertzfeld delved into Apple's archive to illustrate it. The book is strewn with period photos, marketing materials and hand-drawn sketches, many published for the first time.
