makes me wonder what the hell is going on in this world. :-1
LONEDELL, Mo. - A woman slashed the throat of a new mother in a rural Missouri home Friday and fled with her 1-week-old daughter, the Franklin County Sheriff's Department said.
The 21-year-old mother, who was in serious condition in a St. Louis hospital, told police she did not know the attacker who had knocked on her door to use the telephone, Maj. Mike Copeland said.
Stephenie Ochsenbine's 1-year-old son was also in the house at the time, but was unharmed. Her boyfriend, James Woods, was at work at the time, Copeland said.
He said the attacker stabbed Ochsenbine several times and slit her throat. Ochsenbine passed out. When she awoke, she discovered the baby missing and went to neighbor Pat Bearden's home to call police. She may have been unconscious for some time, police said.
"She was standing there with blood all over her and said, 'Somebody stole my baby,'" said Bearden, who called 911.
He also said there were signs of a struggle in the house and that evidence supported Ochsenbine's story.
"Presently there's nothing to indicate the family had anything to do with it," Copeland said.
He also said there was no motive but noted a hand-painted sign on aluminum siding in the couple's front yard celebrating Abby's birth.
Copeland said the FBI had joined the investigation, and it was unlikely the suspect was still in the area.
Residents of Lonedell, a small town about 45 miles south of St. Louis, were shaken by the attack.
"Everyone around here is holding their child a little bit tighter tonight," resident Miste Morton said.
