Shortly after I became a member, I posted about Breed Specific Legislation and how "pit bull" bans are not the answer to stopping dog bites. A couple of people thought they sounded like the perfect answer to what is percieved to be a growing problem. (It really isn't a growing problem - it is just getting more press coverage.)

Anyway. Here is a good reason why breed specific legislation doesn't work.

Maquoketa Iowa-Rottie confiscated as a "pit bull"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Has a ban on "pit bulls" and NOW the police department has confiscated a woman's Rottie as a "pit bull mix". Do not know when this happened but they are addressing this (below) at Council Monday....or the circumstances.

NOW the city is looking to ban all MIX breeds in case they have some little tiny portion of a broad headed, close coated dog in thier background three hundred years ago.

Below is contact information. Please write polite letters:

Ludicrous! What's next? DNA tests on dogs?

Makes as much sense as banning Chapstick on airlines.

You're right, of course! I know...maybe a more appropriate punishment would be for them to be forced to work in animal shelters, euthanizing all those mixed-breed dogs?

I think they are going to find that they will have created a very expensive problem. Every single high priced designer dog is a mixed breed and will be against the law! Which is fine with me - I am really not all that fond of those poodle mixes.
